This paper presents initial results toward the implementation of a wireless sensor network (WSN) demonstration testbed powered up by vibration energy, as part of the E-CROPS project. The testbed uses MicaZ Motes, supplied by AA batteries. The power drawn by Motes in different modes of operation are measured. Design details of an electromagnetic harvester, and experimental results of charging AA batteries with this harvester at 10 Hz vibration generated in the laboratory, are presented.

Powering-up Wireless Sensor Nodes Utilizing Rechargeable Batteries and an Electromagnetic Vibration Energy Harvesting System
Chamanian, Salar; Baghaee, Sajjad; Ulusan, Hasan; Zorlu, Ozge; Külah, Haluk; Uysal, Elif (2014-10-01)
This paper presents a wireless sensor node (WSN) system where an electromagnetic (EM) energy harvester is utilized for charging its rechargeable batteries while the system is operational. The capability and the performance of an in-house low-frequency EM energy harvester for charging rechargeable NiMH batteries were experimentally verified in comparison to a regular battery charger. Furthermore, the power consumption of MicaZ motes, used as the WSN, was evaluated in detail for different operation conditions...
Average Throughput Performance of Myopic Policy in Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks
Gül, Ömer Melih; Demirekler, Mübeccel (MDPI AG, 2017-9-26)
This paper considers a single-hop wireless sensor network where a fusion center collects data from M energy harvesting wireless sensors. The harvested energy is stored losslessly in an infinite-capacity battery at each sensor. In each time slot, the fusion center schedules K sensors for data transmission over K orthogonal channels. The fusion center does not have direct knowledge on the battery states of sensors, or the statistics of their energy harvesting processes. The fusion center only has information ...
Asymptotically Optimal Scheduling for Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks
Gül, Ömer Melih (2017-10-13)
This paper considers a single-hop wireless sensor network where a fusion center (FC) collects data from M energy harvesting (EH) wireless sensor nodes. The harvested energy is stored losslessly in an infinite-capacity battery at each node. In each time slot, K nodes can be scheduled by the FC to send data over K orthogonal channels. The FC has no direct knowledge on the battery states of nodes, or the statistics of EH processes; it only has information of the outcomes of previous transmission attempts. The ...
Energy scavenging from low-frequency vibrations by using frequency up-conversion for wireless sensor applications
Külah, Haluk (2008-03-01)
This paper presents an electromagnetic (EM) vibration-to-electrical power generator for wireless sensors, which can scavenge energy from low-frequency external vibrations. For most wireless applications, the ambient vibration is generally at very low frequencies (1-100 Hz), and traditional scavenging techniques cannot generate enough energy for proper operation. The reported generator up-converts low-frequency environmental vibrations to a higher frequency through a mechanical frequency up-converter using a...
An adaptable interface circuit for low power MEMS piezoelectric energy harvesters with multi-stage energy extraction
Chamanian, Salar; Ulusan, Hasan; Zorlu, Ozge; Muhtaroglu, Ali; Kulah, Haluk (IEEE; 2017-10-21)
This paper presents a self-powered interface circuit to extract energy from ambient vibrations for powering up microelectronic devices. The system uses a MEMS piezoelectric energy harvester to scavenge power in 5 μW to 400 μW range. Synchronous electric charge extraction (SECE) technique is utilized to transfer harvested energy to output storage with the help of a novel multi-stage energy extraction (MSEE) circuit. The circuit is optimized in 180nm HV CMOS technology to operate with minimum power losses at ...
