Failures of bridges crossing wide rivers may cause a number of inconveniences, such as loss of several lives, damages to public and private properties, and traffic disruption. That is why various modes of bridge failures should be accounted for in the planning and design phases to compensate for such negative impacts. Based on the experience gained from past events, it is known that excessive scouring at bridge piers and abutments has been the main cause of bridge failures. The scouring phenomenon is relatively complex and high degrees of uncertainties are associated with the parameters characterizing this event. Accurate determination of the maximum possible depth of scour at these elements is of importance in realistic decision-making for the safe design of footings. This study is based on the development of clear-water scouring models for bridge abutments having vertical-walls using empirical and semi-empirical approaches. The reliability of the abutment footing level is estimated using the empirical model with Monte Carlo simulations. An application is also presented to illustrate the use of this approach.

Service life assessment of existing highway bridges with no planned regular inspections
Caner, Alp; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Yakut, Ahmet (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2008-03-25)
Safety of a highway infrastructure system depends very much on the proper maintenance of bridges. The level of required maintenance is, typically, determined through a series of regular field inspections with the guidance of safety–economy trade-off. In Turkey, bridge maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation are currently performed on an as-needed basis. Time-dependent reliability analysis cannot be utilized for Turkish bridges for the time being since the majority of the bridges are either not regularly ins...
Dynamic Reliability in Bridge Pier Scouring
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (2002-09-01)
Many bridges crossing wide rivers fail due to excessive local scour around piers and abutments during heavy floods. Because of the random nature and complexity of the overall scouring phenomenon through the bridge opening, there exist uncertainties leading to an unavoidable risk in bridge foundation design. A reliability-based assessment of bridge pier scour is required to examine the relationship between safety factors and reliability, which are key parameters for decision making in design. Herein, a dynam...
Evaluation of Scour Risk at Foundations of River Bridges
Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Çalamak, Melih (2016-07-01)
River bridges are exposed to more inconvenient conditions due to the structure-flow interaction compared to bridges having no contact with flow. Therefore, one of the most important components of the bridge failure risk is the risk induced by soil-flow interaction. In this study, the uncertainties of the hydrological and hydraulic parameters affecting the scouring around bridge piers are examined using appropriate probability density functions. In the analyses, the uncertainties involved in the temporal var...
