Geniş akarsuları geçen köprülerin yıkılmasıyla çok sayıda can kaybı, kamu ve özel mülk hasarları ve trafiğin aksaması gibi problemler yaşanabilir. Bu olumsuzlukların önlenebilmesi amacıyla planlama ve tasarım aşamalarında köprü yıkımına neden olabilecek tüm etkenler ele alınmalıdır. Geçmiş gözlemlere dayanarak köprü yıkılmalarının ana nedeninin orta ve kenar ayaklar etrafında oluşan aşırı oyulmalar olduğu söylenebilir. Ayaklar etrafındaki oyulma olayı oldukça karmaşık olup, bu olayı tetikleyen parametrelerde fazla miktarda belirsizlik bulunmaktadır. Temel derinliğinin gerçekçi olarak saptanabilmesi için ayaklar etrafındaki oyulma derinliğinin hassas olarak bulunması gereklidir. Bu çalışmada, dik köprü kenar ayakları etrafındaki temiz su oyulmasının zamana bağlı değişimini veren amprik ve yarı amprik yöntemler geliştirilmiştir. Temel derinliğinin güvenilirliği, amprik yöntemin Monte Carlo tekniğiyle çözümlenmesinden bulunmaktadır. Ayrıca bu uygulamanın gösterildiği bir örnek sunulmaktadır.
