The elongated Bay of Izmit is one of the most heavily polluted semienclosed basins in Turkey. From systematic data obtained during field studies between 1984 and 1988, it is clear that two distinct water masses are present throughout the year. The brackish water which originated in the Black Sea forms a 10 to 15 m thick surface layer. Its salinity and temperature vary from 22-24 ppt and 20-24 degrees C in summer, to 26 ppt and 7 degrees C, in winter. Marine water, which arrived from the Mediterranean, underlies the permanent pycnocline and has much more stable properties: salinity and temperature ranges are 37.5-38.5 ppt and 14-15 degrees C, respectively.

Monitoring of nuclear abnormalities in peripheral erythrocytes of three fish species from the Goksu Delta (Turkey): genotoxic damage in relation to water pollution
Ergene, Serap; Cavas, Tolga; Celik, Ayla; Koleli, Nurcan; Kaya, Filiz; Karahan, Arzu (2007-05-01)
Goksu Delta is a specially protected area in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The delta is classified as a Wetland of International Importance according to the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. Increases in population have recently taken place in this region due to heavy agricultural activities and discharges of anthropogenic wastes. In the present study, frequencies of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities such as, micronuclei (MN) and nuclear buds (NB) were investigated in periphe...
A review of plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems of Turkey
Çevik, Cem ; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Tavşanoğlu, Ülkü Nihan ; Kankılıç, Gökben Başaran ; Gündoğdu, Sedat (2021-12-01)
Turkey is one of the major plastic pollution sources in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. This review summarizes present information, data, and legislation on plastic pollution in Turkish aquatic ecosystems. According to results derived from reviewed studies, both macro- and microplastic pollutions were documented in Turkish aquatic ecosystems. Most of the studies on plastic pollution in Turkish waters were performed in the marine environment while only four were conducted in freshwater environments. Spa...
Holocene paleoenvironmental evolution of the Acıgöl paleo maar lake (Nevşehir, Central Anatolia)
Tuncer, Alaettin; Tunoğlu, Cemal ; Aydar, Erkan ; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Gümüş, Burçin Aşkım ; Şen, Erdal (2019-12-01)
Acıgöl (Nevşehir, Central Anatolia) is a drained crater lake. Acıgöl maar was formed by the violent vapor explosions due to the interaction of hot rhyolitic magma with the (sub-)surface water during the latest Pleistocene. A 844 cm-deep borehole was drilled at the maar and 713 cm-thick Acıgöl Core Succession (ACS) was retrieved. The ACS is mainly composed of lower laminated and upper non-laminated mudstones (sandy, silty, and clayey) with rare organic and volcanic interlayers. Eleven ostracod taxa (Cypris p...
Recent sedimentation in the Black Sea: New insights from radionuclide distributions and sulfur isotopes
Yücel, Mustafa; Butler, Ian B.; BOYCE, Adrian; Luther, George W. (2012-08-01)
The Black Sea is the world's largest anoxic-sulfidic marine basin and has unique sedimentation conditions. Recent studies suggested that mass accumulation rates (MAR) in this environment have increased in the past century when compared to the last 2000 years (Unit 1 period). In this paper we test this hypothesis with new MAR data and further explore the relationship between the depositional pattern and pyrite-sulfur isotopic signature. Based on 15 cores sampled in 2001 and 2003, our dataset comprises radioa...
Continuous resistivity profiling survey in Mersin Harbour, Northeastern Mediterranean Sea
OKYAR, Mahmut; YILMAZ, Sedat; Tezcan, Devrim; Cavas, Hakan (2013-06-01)
No detailed information has previously been available on the geological and geophysical characteristics of the sea floor and the underlying strata of Mersin Harbour, Northeastern Mediterranean Sea (Turkey). Continuous resistivity profiling (CRP) and borehole data from Mersin Harbour were used to interpret geoelectric stratigraphy of Neogene-Quaternary sediments in the area. This represents one of few such detailed case studies that have applied these valuable CRP techniques for the purpose of marine stratig...
