Analysis of Tuncbilek underground coal mine accidents based on risk analysis techniques

2000-06-02
Underground coal mine accidents result in many losses which directly reflects to the cost of mining. The randomness in the appearance of the accidents can be determined by frequency that considers how often a specific type of the accident may occur and the severity of the accident in which a financial loss arises resulted from the occurrence of the accident. Modelling these two basic variables statistically enables the researchers to estimate the probability of future losses and to determine the risk factor of the specific type of accidents. In this paper a risk assessment approach is considered to evaluate the risk profile in Tuncbilek underground coal mine in Turkey by using last four years of accident data.

Analysis and modelling for risk management for underground coal mines’ safety
Eratak, Özlem Deniz; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Mining Engineering (2014)
Safety in underground coal mining has become an important issue because of increasing number of accidents. There are many different hazards may cause these accidents and the most efficient method for coping with risks is the use of risk management techniques. In this thesis, accident data including workday losses, age of the injured, organ affected by accident, season, shift and reason of the accident was collected from TKI mines (ELI- Soma Eynez and GLI Tuncbilek) and TTK mines. Those variables were initia...
Analysis of roof fall hazards and risk assessment for Zonguldak coal basin underground mines
Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem (Elsevier BV, 2005-10-17)
The roof fall hazards are frequent problems of underground coal mines, which are generally unpredictable due to the associated uncertainties. These uncertainties, which arise from geological and stress conditions and mine environment, make the control of roof fall hazards difficult in underground coal mines. The most efficient method for coping with uncertainties in roof fall hazards is the use of risk assessment techniques. In this study, a risk assessment and management methodology is proposed for roof fa...
Assessment and management of roof fall risks in underground coal mines
Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Einstein, HH (Elsevier BV, 2004-01-01)
Accidents caused by roof falls are commonly faced problems of underground coal mines. These accidents may have detrimental effects on workers in the form of injury, disability or fatality as well as mining company due to downtimes, interruptions in the mining operations, equipment breakdowns, etc. This study proposes a risk and decision analysis methodology for the assessment and management of risk associated with mine roof falls in underground coal mines. In the proposed methodology, risk assessment requir...
Development of a GIS-based monitoring and management system for underground coal mining safety
Şalap, Seda; KARSLIOĞLU, MAHMUT ONUR; Demirel, Nuray (Elsevier BV, 2009-11-01)
Coal mine safety is of paramount concern to mining industry. Mine accidents have various causes and consequences including catastrophic failure of mine, substantial economic losses and most notably loss of lives. Therefore, any initiative in mine monitoring is of vital importance for progressing safety surveillance and maintenance.
Monitoring and statistical modelling of dust concentration of some Turkish lignites under laboratory conditions
Karakaş, Ahmet; Güyagüler, Tevfik; Department of Mining Engineering (2010)
Although technological developments enable maximum safety, high dust formation is still a crucial problem in coal mining sector. This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between amount of coal dust produced during cutting operation and some important coal properties together with cutting parameters for different particle size ranges in laboratory conditions. For this purpose, six Turkish lignite samples were used in the experiments. Two experiment sets were designed to generate coal dust by using...
