Tracking of multiple ground targets with airborne Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) sensor measurements is a challenging problem where heavy and dense false alarms with high target density are inevitably encountered in the surveillance scenes. Hence, optimal approaches require heavy computational load where the duration of overall computation rises exponentially with the number of target tracks and measurements in observation per scan. Consequently, more practical suboptimal approaches, such as Linear Multi-Target (LM) approach, is explored due to linear number of operations in the number of target tracks with a negligible performance loss compared to optimal approaches. Although LM approach performs modestly adequate with significantly less computation duration than optimal approaches, it is highly susceptible to track loss, as in the rest of suboptimal approaches, when the targets are closely spaced and the number of targets and measurements are considerably high. Simulations are carried out in realistic test scenarios to compare single target tracking algorithms including IMM-PDA and IMM-IPDA algorithms; Optimal approaches in multitarget tracking including IMM-JPDA, IMM-IJPDA and IMM-JIPDA algorithms and an example of Linear Multi-target approaches in multitarget tracking including IMM-LMIPDA algorithm. Benchmarkings of these algorithms are done under RMSE performance, track loss and computation time evaluation results.

Ground Target Tracking of a Temporarily Invisible Target due to Topographic Constraints
Alat, Goken; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; Baykal, Buyurman (2013-04-26)
It is possible that topographic constraints hide targets in ground target tracking. It is important that hidden targets are tracked effectively when they are invisible during hidden portions of their motion. In addition to that, existence of heavy clutter makes the problem even more challenging. To address this problem, an airborne GMTI radar with a VSIMM-PDAF tracker is considered. Traditional approaches make assumptions regarding the motion of the target during hidden modes, e. g., constant velocity assum...
Target tracking with phased array radar by using adaptive update rate
İpek, Özlem; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
In radar target tracking problems, it may be required to use adaptive update rate in order to maintain the tracking accuracy while allowing the radar to use its resources economically at the same time. This is generally the case if the target trajectory has maneuvering segments and in such a case the use of adaptive update time interval algorithms for estimation of the target state may enhance the tracking accuracy. Conventionally, fixed track update time interval is used in radar target tracking due to the...
Target Tracking With Particle Filters Under Signal Propagation Delays
Orguner, Umut (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2011-06-01)
Signal propagation delays are hardly a problem for target tracking with standard sensors such as radar and vision due to the fact that the speed of light is much higher than the speed of the target. This contribution studies the case where the ratio of the target and the propagation speed is not negligible, as in the case of sensor networks with microphones, geophones or sonars for instance, where the signal speed in air, ground and water causes a state dependent and stochastic delay of the observations. Th...
Tracking rectangular and elliptical extended targets using laser measurements
Granström, Karl; Lundquist, Christian; Orguner, Umut (IEEE; 2011-07-08)
This paper considers tracking of extended targets using data from laser range sensors. Two types of extended target shapes are considered, rectangular and elliptical, and a method to compute predicted measurements and corresponding innovation covariances is suggested. The proposed method can easily be integrated into any tracking framework that relies on the use of an extended Kalman filter. Here, it is used together with a recently proposed Gaussian mixture probability hypothesis density (GM-PHD) filter fo...
Target tracking using delayed measurements with implicit constraints
Orguner, Umut (2008-07-03)
In target tracking, standard sensors as radar and EO/IR observe the target with a negligible delay, since the speed of light is much larger than the speed of the target. This contribution studies the case where the ratio of the target and the propagation speed is not negligible, as is the case in sensor networks with microphones, geophones or sonars for instance, where the speed of air, ground waves and water cause a state dependent and stochastic delay of the observations. The proposed approach utilizes a ...
