Workflows are activities involving the coordinated execution of multiple tasks performed by different processing entities, mostly in distributed heterogeneous environments which are very common in enterprises of even moderate complexity. Centralized workflow systems fall short to meet the demands of such environments.

Design and implementation of a distributed workflow enactment service
Gokkoca, E; Altinel, M; Cingil, I; Tatbul, EN; Koksal, P; Doğaç, Asuman (1997-06-27)
Workflows are activities involving the coordinated execution of multiple tasks performed by different processing entities, mostly in distributed heterogeneous environments which are very common in enterprises of even moderate complexity. In current commercial workflow systems, the workflow scheduler is a single centralized component. A distributed workflow enactment service on the other hand should contain several schedulers on different nodes of a network each executing parts of process instances. Such an ...
Design and implementation of a plug-in framework for distributed object technologies
Kadıoğlu, Koray; Doğru, Ali Hikmet; Department of Computer Engineering (2006)
This thesis presents a framework design and implementation that enables run-time selection of different remote call mechanisms. In order to implement an extendable and modular system with run-time upgrading facility, a plug-in framework design is used. Since such a design requires enhanced usage of run-time facilities of the programming language that is used to implement the framework, in this study Java is selected because of its reflection and dynamic class loading facilities. A sample usage of this frame...
An analytical model for source code distributability verification
Isazadeh, Ayaz; Karimpour, Jaber; Elgedawy, Islam; Izadkhah, Habib (Zhejiang University Press, 2014-02-01)
One way to speed up the execution of sequential programs is to divide them into concurrent segments and execute such segments in a parallel manner over a distributed computing environment. We argue that the execution speedup primarily depends on the concurrency degree between the identified segments as well as communication overhead between the segments. To guarantee the best speedup, we have to obtain the maximum possible concurrency degree between the identified segments, taking communication overhead int...
An architecture for workflow scheduling under resource allocation constraints
Karagöz, Pınar; Toroslu, İsmail Hakkı (Elsevier BV, 2005-07-01)
Research on specification and scheduling of workflows has concentrated on temporal and causality constraints, which specify existence and order dependencies among tasks. However, another set of constraints that specify resource allocation is also equally important. The resources in a workflow environment are agents such as person, machine, software, etc. that execute the task. Execution of a task has a cost and this may vary depending on the resources allocated in order to execute that task. Resource alloca...
Design of a variable five-axes adjustable configuration robot manipulator
YUCEL, AS; Ersak, Aydın (1994-04-14)
A robot manipulator design is presented in this paper supplying a few kinematical configurations in a single structure which is in the mean time, reconfigurable for given tasks and hence making the level of flexibility and adaptability much higher for changing working environments
