Objective: The fact that breast cancer is a common type of cancer necessitates the research on the risk factors of it. Studies about type C personality, which is stated to be a risk factor for breast cancer, yielded controversial results regarding type C personality-cancer development relationship. Type C personality has two factors, namely self sacrificing behavior and emotional non-expressiveness. To measure type C personality traits in Turkish breast cancer patients, adaptation of Type C Behavior-TCB Scale and examination of its reliability and validity were necessary. Methods: One hundred and one Turkish breast cancer patients and a control group which consisted of 99 participants, who were not cancer patients, received Type C Personality Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and extraversion subscale of Basic Personality Traits Inventory. One month after the first application, Type C Personality Scale was readministrated to measure test-retest reliability of the scale. Findings: Factor analysis confirmed the exact fit of the two-factor model. While the internal consistency reliability of the whole scale was 0.81, test retest reliability of the whole scale was 0.87. The internal consistency reliabilities of subscales were ranged between 0.80 and 0.86. In order to test divergent validity of the scale, extraversion subscale of the Basic Personality Traits Inventory (r=-0.24, p<0.05), and to test convergent validity of the scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale (r=0.52, p<0.01) were used. Discussion: The results of the study indicate that Turkish adaptation of the Type C Personality Scale has satisfactory reliability and validity values.
Application of image enhancement algorithms to improve the visibility and classification of microcalcifications in mammograms
Akbay, Cansu; Gençer, Nevzat Güneri; Gençer, Gülay; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2015)
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women. Mammography is the most effective technology presently available for breast cancer screening, despite the fact that there are still some limitations of the imaging technique, such as insufficient resolution, low local contrast and noise combined with the subtle nature of the usual radiographic findings. One of the most important radiographic findings associated to the existence of breast cancer is the clustered microcalcifications. Especi...
Comparison of the Diagnostic Accuracy of Next Generation Sequencing and Microarray Resequencing Methods for Detection of BRCA1 and BRCA2 Gene Mutations

Objective: Breast cancer constitutes 29 % of estimated new cases of cancer in women, and it is also one of the major cause of death in all cancer types. In this study, DNA samples of familial breast cancer patients with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations which had been analyzed using conventional DNA sequencing method, were also analyzed with new methods including microarray and next generation sequencing (NGS) in order to compare their results Methods: Seven patients with BRCA1 mutation, one patient with BRCA2 m...
Investigaton of chemopreventive properties of Urtica Dioica L., in MCF-7 and MDA231 breast cancer cell lines
Güler, Elif; İşcan, Mesude; Department of Biology (2011)
Cancer is a major health problem in developing world with mostly unsufficient treatment. Cancer prevention through dietary modification appears to be a practical and cost effective possibility. The aim of present study is to investigate the chemical components of “Urtica diocia,L (U. diocia) grown in Turkey” and the possible protective potential of its aqueous extract against breast cancer cell lines. U. diocia was extracted by maceration method which was performed for 6,12, 24, and 36 hours, at 50°C, 37°C,...
Design for positive breast self-examination experience: an investigation into mobile health apps

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types among women, responsible for approximately 627,000 deaths globally in 2018. There are various screening methods to detect cancer early, and experts suggest that women should perform breast self-examination (BSE) once a month. Unfortunately, most women fail to do so even if they are aware of the risks and the importance of screening methods. Moreover, developments in technology provide people to manage their own health in their own environments with variou...
