In this study, stable C and O isotope compositions of bulk rock samples from Barremian-Aptian platform carbonates of the Taurides, the Pontides, and of their pelagic counterparts of the Sakarya continent in Turkey were measured for the first time. Platform carbonates and pelagic successions including a prominent black shale interval are composed of distinct sedimentary cycles in the form of meter-scale shallowing-upward sequences and limestone-marl/ shale couplets, respectively. The biostratigraphy and the delta(13)C values allow this black shale interval to be correlated with the "Selli level". Variations in lithofacies and delta(13)C and delta(18)O values with the magnitudes of about 2parts per thousand within the cycles indicate high frequency fluctuations in sea level, probably in response to alternate periods of cooling and warming occurring on Milankovitch-cycle scales even during the greenhouse-type Cretaceous. A good overall correlation between sedimentary cyclicity and variations in delta(18)O values suggests preservation of the primary isotopic signal.

CO2 outburst events in relation to seismicity: Constraints from microscale geochronology, geochemistry of late Quaternary vein carbonates, SW Turkey
UENAL-IMER, Ezgi; UYSAL, I. Tonguc; ZHAO, Jian-Xin; Isik, Veysel; SHULMEISTER, James; İmer, Ali; FENG, Yue-Xing (2016-08-15)
Vein and breccia carbonates precipitated in a highly fractured/faulted carbonate bedrock in SW Turkey were investigated through high-resolution U-series geochronology, microstructural and geochemical studies including C-O-Sr isotope and rare-earth element and yttrium (REY) analyses. Petrographical observations and geochronological data are interpreted as evidence that the calcite veins formed through a crack-seal mechanism, mostly accompanied/initiated by intensive hydraulic fracturing of the host limestone...
Microfacies and stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ18O) of the upper Serpukhovian-Moscovian carbonates in the Hadim Nappe, southern Turkey: an approach to document the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA)
Akbaş, Melikan; Okuyucu, Cengiz; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer (2022-07-01)
© 2022, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature. The Late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA) span from latest Devonian to Late Permian (Lopingian) and was one of the three major Phanerozoic glaciations. Large continental ice sheets covered wide parts of Gondwana at high latitudes of the southern hemisphere during the Pennsylvanian and Cisuralian/Early Permian. Many paleoclimate reconstructions have been based on direct evidence of glacial deposits or indirect evidence (far-field effects) of stable isotop...
Stable isotope-based reconstruction of Oligo-Miocene paleoenvironment and paleohydrology of Central Anatolian lake basins (Turkey)
Luedecke, Tina; Mikes, Tamas; Rojay, Fuat Bora; Cosca, Michael A.; Mulch, Andreas (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, 2013-01-01)
Isotope geochemistry of lacustrine carbonate represents a powerful tool to reconstruct paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of long-term oxygen (delta O-18) and carbon (delta C-13) stable isotope records from 5 Chattian to Burdigalian lacustrine sequences distributed over the Central Anatolian Plateau. Field relationships combined with stable isotope geochemistry indicate a relatively humid subtropic Late Oligocene climate with an environment characterized by...
Spatial variations in gas and stable isotope compositions of thermal fluids around Lake Van: Implications for crust-mantle dynamics in eastern Turkey
Mutlu, Halim; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; Hilton, David R.; Aydın, Harun; Halldorsson, Saemundur A. (2012-03-18)
We investigate the helium (He-3/He-4) and carbon (delta C-13) isotope compositions and relative abundance ratios (CO2/He-3) of gas samples together with the stable isotope compositions of dissolved carbon and sulfur and the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the associated water phase from a number of geothermal fields located around Lake Van in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The mantle-derived helium component, which is likely transferred to the crust beneath eastern Turkey by recent magmatism, is fou...
Size distribution of trace elements and major ions in the eastern Mediterranean atmosphere
Kuloglu, E; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2005-10-01)
Size distribution of trace elements is measured at the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, by analyzing hi-vol impactor samples collected between August 1993 and May 1994. Mass median diameters of marine elements are between 4.6 and 5.3 mu m, and those of crustal elements are between 3.0 and 3.5 mu m. Mass median diameters of crustal elements are 30% smaller in samples impacted by Saharan Dust. Pollution derived elements, As, Cd, Mo, Pb, Se, and Zn have MMD's between 1.25 and 1.01 mu m. Although 70-90% of the ma...
