The change in ballistic performance of AISI 4340 steel plates with different thicknesses and varying hardness against 7.62 AP (Armor Piercing) projectiles is studied. Four different target plate hardnesses are chosen. The commercial hydrocode software ANSYS Autodyn is used in numerical studies. Johnson-Cook strength model parameters for the varying target plate hardness are calibrated from mechanical tests. The numerical simulation results using this model are confirmed by a series of experimental test results. Good agreement is obtained between the numerical results and experimental findings in terms of residual projectile velocities. Finally it is seen that the ballistic protection offered by AISI 4340 steel increases with the increasing hardness.

Numerical and experimental investigation of perforation of st-37 steel plates by oblique impact
Öztürk, Gökhan; Yıldırım, Raif Orhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
In this thesis, it is aimed to determine the ballistic limit thicknesses of ST-37 steel plates under oblique impact of bullets having hard steel core (DIN 100Cr6 at 61-62 HRc) by using both experimental and numerical methods. In experimental part, angles of attack of the bullets are changed from 0 to 70 degrees by 10 degrees increments. Bullet velocities are measured for each shot just before the impact and they are found to be between 790-830 m/s. The minimum plate thickness that is not perforated and the ...
Delamination of layered materials under impact loading
Dinç, Dinçer; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2003)
In this study, a cold worked tool steel and a low carbon steel ( St 37 ), which were joined by brazing, were subjected to impact and shear loading. The end product is used as paper cutting blades in the industry. Effects of different brazing filler metals on the delamination of the blades under impact loading and on the impact toughness of the blades were studied. The target is to achieve higher impact toughness values without delamination. Impact toughness of the steels, joined by Cu, CuNi and BNi brazing ...
Numerical simulation of non-energetic reactive armors
Kurt, Mert Can; Gürses, Ercan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2017)
Non-energetic reactive armors (NERAs) are one type of reactive armors which are developed to reinforce main armors of heavily armoured vehicles. Non-energetic reactive armors also called as bulging armors are known to be effective against lethal effects of shaped charges. Their structures are like sandwich structures and consist of one intermediate layer between two outer metal plates. The intermediate layer is made of inert materials such as rubber or polymers. The intermediate layer and the outer metal pl...
Non-destructive evaluation of residual stresses in the multi-pass steel weldments
Erian, Gökhan; Gür, Cemil Hakan; Batıgün, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
The purpose of this thesis is non-destructive determination of residual stress state in the multi-pass welded steel plates by Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN) technique. To control the effectiveness of the developed procedure, continuous MBN measurements on the heat affected zone and parent metal of the welded plates were performed. In the experimental part, various steel plates were welded with different number of weld passes. Various series of samples were prepared for residual stress and for angular defle...
Ballistic impact performance of an armor material consisting of alumina and dual phase steel layers
Ubeyli, Mustafa; Deniz, Huseyin; DEMİR, TEYFİK; Ögel, Bilgehan; Gurel, Bayram; KELEŞ, Ömer (2011-03-01)
Utilization of a ceramic front layer provides an improvement in the ballistic efficiency of monolithic metallic materials. In the current paper, the ballistic behavior of laminated composite having alumina front and dual phase steel backing layers was studied using 7.62 mm armor piercing (AP) projectiles under normal impact. The variables used were martensite content of the backing layer and the areal density of the composite. Experimental results showed that utilization of a 6 mm thick alumina front layer ...
