This research covers the determination of the existing situation of trihalomethane (THM) levels in the distribution system of Ankara City and also focuses on the investigation of effectiveness of granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) that are THM precursors and also THMs. For this purpose, a survey was carried out at 14 selected points in the city and the THMs were observed to be present in the Ivedik Water Treatment Plant (IWTP) filter effluent and in the distribution system (DS). THM concentrations increased within the DS, however, total THM (TTHM) levels did not exceed the EPA Stage I Limit of 80 mug/L.

Removal of THM precursors by GAC: Ankara case study
Capar, G; Yetiş, Ülkü (2002-03-01)
The effectiveness of granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption for the removal of natural organic matter and trihalomethanes from Ivedik Water Treatment Plant of Ankara City is investigated. Freundlich Isotherm constants K and n were determined as 17.61 and 1.66, respectively. Bench-scale GAC columns were run with empty bed contact times (EBCT) varying from 0.40 to 2.67 min to evaluate adsorption performance. 50% exhaustion values were used for comparison. The treated volumes of water increased with EBCT, ...
Removal of disinfection by-product precursors by UF and NF membranes in low-SUVA waters
Ates, Nuray; Yılmaz, Levent; Kitis, Mehmet; Yetiş, Ülkü (Elsevier BV, 2009-2)
The performance of ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes on disinfection by-products (DBPs) precursor removal in a surface water having low-to-medium dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA(254)) levels was evaluated. While higher molecular weight (HMW) DOC fraction was successfully rejected (> 90%), lower molecular weight (LMW) fraction could be removed only 1.5-30% by the tested four different membranes (two UF and two NF). This finding suggested that alth...
Synthesis and enzymatic resolution of various cyclopentenoid and cyclohexenoid type compounds
İyigün, Çiğdem; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2005)
The aim of this thesis is to synthesize enantiomerically enriched cyclopentenoid and cyclohexenoid type of compounds with quaternary carbon stereocenters that are the simplest precursors of the complex natural products. The first part of the study involves the preparation of ?'-acetoxy ?'-substituted ?,β-unsaturated cyclic ketones. Methylation, ethylation, benzylation and allylation of cyclohexenone and cyclopentenone derivatives are performed. Then, these compounds are regioselectively oxidized at the ?'-p...
THE REMOVAL OF PHORATE FROM WATER BY ADSORPTION ON POWDERED ACTIVATED CARBON AND CHABAZITE
Polat, Cansu; Yetiş, Ülkü; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2022-9-8)
The removal of phorate from aqueous solution by adsorption on two different adsorbents, powdered activated carbon (PAC) and natural zeolite chabazite (CHA), has been studied. Effects of operational conditions, such as initial phorate concentration (1, 0.75 and 0.5 mg/L), PAC and CHA doses (12.5, 25 and 37.5 mg/L), pH (3, 7 and 9), temperature (15, 25 and 35 ºC) and mixing intesities (120, 160 and 200 rpm) were investigated. Under acidic conditions (pH=3), PAC and CHA performes better. Especially when the ad...
Removal of Pesticides from Wastewater by Membrane Proces

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the removal performances of four pesticides (tributyl phosphate, flutriafol, dicofol and irgarol) by RO membranes. Methods: Three different RO membranes (BW30-LE, SW30-XLE and GE-AD) were used to reject pesticides in two transmembrane pressures of 10 and 20 bar in bench-scale membrane filtration cell. Tributyl phosphate and flutriafol were detected by GC/MS and dicofol and irgarol were monitored by HLPC instruments. Results: While the highest removal of trib...
