The performance of ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes on disinfection by-products (DBPs) precursor removal in a surface water having low-to-medium dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA(254)) levels was evaluated. While higher molecular weight (HMW) DOC fraction was successfully rejected (> 90%), lower molecular weight (LMW) fraction could be removed only 1.5-30% by the tested four different membranes (two UF and two NF). This finding suggested that although NF and UF membranes with pore sizes of <= 1000 Da are highly effective on the removal of HMW NOM from waters having low-to-medium DOC and SUVA(254) levels, such membranes are not effective in these waters in rejecting LMW fractions (i.e., < 2000 Da). NF membranes provided THM and HAA formation reductions above 90%. However, DOC and UVA(254) rejections could not be directly linked to DBP formation reductions by the tested membranes. Due to higher rejection of DOC than the bromide ion in UF and NF separation, Br/DOC ratio increased which further increased the relative occurrence of brominated THM and HAA species over chlorinated ones.

Separation of the protease enzymes of Bacillus licheniformis from the fermentation medium by crossflow ultrafiltration
Takac, S; Elmas, S; Çalık, Pınar; Ozdamar, TH (2000-06-01)
The separation from fermentation medium of extracellular serine alkaline protease (SAP) enzyme produced by Bacillus licheniformis was investigated using a crossflow ultrafiltration system. SAP was separated from the high molecular weight neutral protease (NP) and amylase (AMY) enzymes and from the low molecular weight organic acids and amino acids in a crossflow ultrafiltration system with 30000 Da and 10000 Da MWCO polysulfone membranes, respectively. The effects of transmembrane pressure (TMP), recirculat...
Removal of trihalomethane precursors by granular activated carbon treatment
CAPAR, Goksen; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Yetiş, Ülkü (2001-02-01)
This research covers the determination of the existing situation of trihalomethane (THM) levels in the distribution system of Ankara City and also focuses on the investigation of effectiveness of granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) that are THM precursors and also THMs. For this purpose, a survey was carried out at 14 selected points in the city and the THMs were observed to be present in the Ivedik Water Treatment Plant (IWTP) filter effluent and in th...
Use of calcium alginate as a coagulant in water treatment
Çoruh, Hale Aylin; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Coagulation and flocculation processes are important parts of water and wastewater treatment. Coagulation or destabilization of colloidal suspensions results in aggregation of colloidal particles by physical and chemical processes. Flocculation results in the formation of larger and settleable structures by bridging. Alginate, a polysaccharide obtained from marine brown algae, produces a gel structure when mixed with calcium ions, which is expected to be a potential coagulant in water treatment. This study ...
Removal of mercury from aqueous solutions via polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration
Uludağ, Yusuf; Yılmaz, Levent (1997-06-25)
Separation of mercury from aqueous solutions by continuous polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) was investigated. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was added to the solutions as the complexing agent before circulating the solution in a laboratory-scale continuous ultrafiltration system. Effects of mercury-to-polymer ratio, pressure drop and feed solution circulation rate on retention of mercury and permeate flux were studied. Constant retention values close to unity were obtained until a critical mercury-to-polyme...
Removal of Pesticides from Wastewater by Membrane Proces

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the removal performances of four pesticides (tributyl phosphate, flutriafol, dicofol and irgarol) by RO membranes. Methods: Three different RO membranes (BW30-LE, SW30-XLE and GE-AD) were used to reject pesticides in two transmembrane pressures of 10 and 20 bar in bench-scale membrane filtration cell. Tributyl phosphate and flutriafol were detected by GC/MS and dicofol and irgarol were monitored by HLPC instruments. Results: While the highest removal of trib...
