Calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite-PLGA composites: Mechanical and microstructural investigation

2000-09-15
The microstructural and mechanical properties of composites composed of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHAp) and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) have been investigated. The composites were formed by hydyolysis of alpha-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) to CDHAp in pressed precomposite compacts of alpha-TCP-PLGA-NaCl. The differences in hydrolysis of alpha-TCP-PLGA-NaCl for two compositions of 80:10:10 wt % and 60:20:20 wt %. were monitored by isothermal calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The microstructural evolution and variance in final composite microstructure after hydrolysis at 37 degrees C, 45 degrees C, and 56 degrees C were examined by scanning electron microscopy. HAp-PLGA composite formed from the alpha-TCP-PLGA-NaCl (80:10:10) precomposites at 37 degrees C developed a tensile strength of 13.3 +/- 0.9 MPa, a flexural strength of 24.8 +/- 1.7 MPa, and Young's modulus of 2.8 +/- 0.3 GPa. These values were 12.00 +/- 0.2 MPa, 36.1 +/- 2.1 MPa, and 5.5 +/- 0.8 GPa for the precomposite composition 60:20:20. All these mechanical properties showed a variation with hydrolysis temperature and composition. The differences in mechanical properties were related to the final microstructures of the composites, which are governed by the morphological changes in the polymer structure at its glass transition temperature and the extent of cement-type formation of CDHAp by hydrolysis of alpha-TCP. Calcium Phosphate Mineralization on Calcium Carbonate Particle Incorporated Silk-Fibroin Composites
Kapusuz, Derya; Ercan, Batur (2019-09-01)
In this study, three anhydrous forms of calcium carbonate, namely vaterite, aragonite and calcite, with distinct morphologies were incorporated inside silk-fibroin to fabricate composite scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. To assess calcium phosphate mineralization, composite scaffolds were treated with simulated body fluid up to one month. It was observed that composite scaffolds having different calcium carbonate polymorphs expressed different mineralization. Incorporating 25 wt. % of vaterite ...
Modification of Acrylic Bone Cements with Oxygen Plasma and Additives
Endoğan Tanır, Tuğba; Kızıltay, Aysel; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Hasırcı, Nesrin (2012-09-01)
Acrylic bone cements which are commonly used for the fixation of orthopedic prostheses, were prepared at different formulations, by using either ground poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles or homogeneously synthesized PMMA microspheres with application of plasma and addition of various ingredients in order to improve mechanical and thermal properties. PMMA powders having three different particle size (ground and sieved particles with 0-50 mu m (BC1 group, average particle size: 21 mu m) and 50-150 mu ...
Thermal degradation of Polylactide/Poly(ethylene glycol) fibers and composite fibers involving organoclay
Ozdemir, Esra; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2018-01-01)
In this study, electrospun fibers of melt blended poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene glycol), (PLA)-PEG blends involving 10, 15 and 20 wt% PEG and their corresponding composites with organically modified montmorillonite, Cloisite 30B were prepared and characterized by x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry techniques. The narrower fiber diameters observed for the PLA-PEG fibers involving organoclay compared to the corresponding neat fib...
Production of epoxide functionalized boehmite nanoparticles and their use in epoxide nanocomposites
Coniku, Anisa; Gündüz, Güngör; Maviş, Bora; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
In the present study the effects of addition of organically functionalized boehmite nano-particles on the mechanical properties of epoxy polymers were analyzed. Nanosize platelets of boehmite powders were produced via a hydrothermal process from the raw material aluminum trihydroxide Al(OH)3 provided by a a chemical supplier, but which in future studies can be replaced by local resources of aluminum trihydroxide available in Seydişehir, Turkey. The ground aluminum trihydroxide particles were submitted to a ...
Co-doped hydroxyapatites as potential materials for biomedical applications
YILMAZ, BENGİ; ALSHEMARY, AMMAR ZEIDAN GHAILAN; Evis, Zafer (2019-01-01)
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a synthetic biomaterial resembling the composition of mammalian hard tissue and thus, it is widely employed as a bone graft material, hard tissue engineering scaffold and coating layer for metallic substrates. Biological apatite is non-stoichiometric in nature. It is composed of small crystals and characterized by poor crystallinity and relatively high solubility with respect to stoichiometric HA. Chemical compositions of these crystals consist of Ca, P and trace amounts of various io...
