ORGANIC ACID PRODUCTION FROM THE ORGANIC FRACTION OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE AND COW MANURE IN LEACHING BED REACTORS

2016-11-01
This study was carried out to (1) investigate the potential of in-vessel solid-state anaerobic acidogenic co-digestion of high solids containing substrates, namely organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and cow manure and (2) examine the feasibility of using leaching bed reactors (LBR) for hydrolysis/liquefaction and acidification of OFMSW and cow manure mixtures for maximum total volatile fatty acid (VFA) and alcohol production. Results indicated that hydrolysis efficiency of 2025% of was achieved in the LBR containing 100 % OFMSW and 75 % OFMSW and 25% manure. The hydrolysis was mainly realized in the initial 20 days and the acid production was observed in the initial 25-30 day period. The maximum total VFA concentration (in terms of acetic acid) achieved was around 6500 mg/L. The main VFA were found as acetic acid and butyric acid, whereas the main alcohol produced was found as ethanol. The LBR were found as efficient reactors in terms of rapid hydrolysis and acidification of the feedstocks investigated. The produced VFA can be used as a raw material in many industrial sectors after concentration or as a feedstock for bioenergy (mainly biogas and biohydrogen) production.

Organic acid production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste in leaching bed reactors
Doğan, Evrim; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2006)
This study was carried out to evaluate the potential of high-rate anaerobic digestion of high-solids organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) for the production of organic acids and alcohols in leaching bed reactors (LBRs). For this purpose, two different experimental set-ups, namely Set-1 and Set-2, were operated. In the Set-1, only OFMSW without paper was studied in two identical LBRs, whereas, four identical LBRs, fed with OFMSW with paper and cow manure in different proportions, were operated i...
Performance of leaching bed reactor converting the organic fraction of municipal solid waste to organic acids and alcohols
DOĞAN, Evrim; Dunaev, T.; Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; DEMİRER, GÖKSEL NİYAZİ (2009-02-01)
A lab-scale leaching bed reactor (LBR) was operated to (1) investigate the potential of in-vessel solid-state anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) and (2) examine the feasibility of using LBRs for hydrolysis/liquefaction and acidification of organic fraction of MSW for maximum total volatile fatty acid (tVFA) and alcohol production. A hydrolysis efficiency of 60% was achieved in the LBR, which was mainly affected by the solids content of organic fraction of MSW, the amo...
Anaerobic mesophilic co-digestion of sugar-beet processing wastewater and beet-pulp in batch reactors
Alkaya, Emrah; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2011-03-01)
In this study, biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay was conducted to investigate the effect of waste mixing and F/M ratio on the co-digestion of wastewater and beet-pulp, in addition to the digestion of the wastes separately. In the studied F/M range (0.51–2.56 g COD/g VSS), observed treatment efficiencies (63.7–87.3% COD removal and 69.6–89.3% VS reduction) were indications of high biodegradability for both wastewater and beet-pulp, which decreased with increasing F/M. It was evident that the extent o...
Volatile Fatty Acid Production from Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste Through Anaerobic Acidogenic Digestion
Dogan, Eylem; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2009-09-01)
There are numerous studies on two-phase anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste (MSW) in the literature. Yet, in the majority of these studies, applied organic loading rates (OLR) were relatively low. This study differs from those in the literature in terms of high OLR application and focuses on the optimization of the acidification phase. Effect of high OLRs and pH values were investigated and optimum operational conditions for acidification were determined. Although conversion of particulate organics...
Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure in a hybrid reactor with biogas recirculation
Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Chen, SL (2005-12-01)
A novel anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) configuration incorporating floating support media for biomass immobilization and biogas recirculation for enhanced mixing was used for anaerobic digestion of dairy manure. No pretreatment or solid liquid separation was applied. The reactor was operated at high influent volatile solids (VS) and organic loading rates (OLR) of up to 9.87% and 7.30 g VS/l day, respectively. After 149 days of continuous operation the results revealed that a high amount (38.1 g VSS) of biom...
