A novel anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) configuration incorporating floating support media for biomass immobilization and biogas recirculation for enhanced mixing was used for anaerobic digestion of dairy manure. No pretreatment or solid liquid separation was applied. The reactor was operated at high influent volatile solids (VS) and organic loading rates (OLR) of up to 9.87% and 7.30 g VS/l day, respectively. After 149 days of continuous operation the results revealed that a high amount (38.1 g VSS) of biomass was able to attach itself to the support medium being used. The investigated AHR configuration achieved COD, BOD, TS, and VS removal efficiencies of 48-63, 64-78, 55-65, and 59-68%, respectively, at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 15 days. The corresponding average methane production value obtained in this study was 0.191 l/g VS added.

Anaerobic mesophilic co-digestion of sugar-beet processing wastewater and beet-pulp in batch reactors
Alkaya, Emrah; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2011-03-01)
In this study, biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay was conducted to investigate the effect of waste mixing and F/M ratio on the co-digestion of wastewater and beet-pulp, in addition to the digestion of the wastes separately. In the studied F/M range (0.51–2.56 g COD/g VSS), observed treatment efficiencies (63.7–87.3% COD removal and 69.6–89.3% VS reduction) were indications of high biodegradability for both wastewater and beet-pulp, which decreased with increasing F/M. It was evident that the extent o...
ORGANIC ACID PRODUCTION FROM THE ORGANIC FRACTION OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE AND COW MANURE IN LEACHING BED REACTORS
Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande (2016-11-01)
This study was carried out to (1) investigate the potential of in-vessel solid-state anaerobic acidogenic co-digestion of high solids containing substrates, namely organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and cow manure and (2) examine the feasibility of using leaching bed reactors (LBR) for hydrolysis/liquefaction and acidification of OFMSW and cow manure mixtures for maximum total volatile fatty acid (VFA) and alcohol production. Results indicated that hydrolysis efficiency of 2025% of was achiev...
Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure with enhanced ammonia removal
Uludag-Demirer, S.; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Frear, C.; Chen, S. (2008-01-01)
Poor ammonia-nitrogen removal in methanogenic anaerobic reactors digesting animal manure has been reported as an important disadvantage of anaerobic digestion (AD) in several studies. Development of anaerobic processes that are capable of producing reduced ammonia-nitrogen levels in their effluent is one of the areas where further research must be pursued if AD technology is to be made more effective and economically advantageous. One approach to removing ammonia from anaerobically digested effluents is the...
Anaerobic biotransformation and methane generation potential of cheese whey in batch and UASB reactors
Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; GÜVEN, ENGİN; DEMİRER, GÖKSEL NİYAZİ (2001-03-01)
Anaerobic treatability and methane generation potential of cheese whey were determined in batch reactors. Furthermore, the effect of nutrient and trace metal supplementation on the batch anaerobic treatment, and the high-rate anaerobic treatability of cheese whey in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were investigated. To this purpose biochemical methane potential experiments were conducted and single- and two-stage UASB reactors with granular cultures were operated. In UASB experiments signifi...
Anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters
Alptekin (Ener), Emel; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
In this study, domestic wastewater was used to determine the anaerobic treatment performances of a dilute wastewater in one-phase upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) system and two-phase upflow anaerobic filter (UAF) and UASB system. The acidification performances of domestic wastewater were compared in UAF and UASB reactors. The degree of acidification is higher in UAF reactor (31%) compared to UASB reactor (18%) at 2 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewaters. T...
