Treatment and disposal/beneficial use are the most important aspects of municipal sludge management. Particularly, the application guidelines and limit values for treatment systems and the major disposal routes including landfilling, land application and incineration are covered in the legislations. This study aims to review the legislations about municipal sludge treatment and disposal from different counties such as Turkey, USA, EU, Canada and South Africa. Evaluations show that the current legislations place a greater emphasis on the beneficial use of sludge, rather than the mere disposal. The specifics of regulations related to combustion changes between different countries such that in some countries separate regulation for sludge combustion is implemented, whereas in others sludge is not specifically mentioned but included among the big group of wastes to be combusted. Similarly, some countries have particular regulations for landfilling of sludge, whereas the others consider sludge within the greater category of biodegradable wastes together with the organic fraction of solid wastes. This study compares and contrasts these issues and current legislations of the aforementioned countries.

Municipal solid waste management with cost minimization and emission control objectives
Mohsenızadeh, Melıka; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Tural, Mustafa Kemal (null; 2017-10-14)
Proper management of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been a crucial aspect of every society due to its social, environmental, and economic impacts. Operations research techniques have frequently focused on cost minimization objectives in locational planning of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) systems. However, transportation constitutes an integral part of this system producing a considerable amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, sustainable management of this system with GHG emissions...

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NORTH CYPRUS
Erhun, Melis; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Ünlü, Kahraman; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2022-2)
Integrated solid waste management (ISWM) is used in order to sustain social and environmental quality within a city by using various treatment methods in parallel. On the other hand, in developing countries, solid waste management is one of the biggest challenges in the large cities. The increase in the population, thus the waste generation arises budget deficits for municipalities due to high management costs. The current waste disposal and management method applied in North Cyprus causes pollution to the ...
Municipal solid waste landfill site selection for the city of Sanliurfa-Turkey: an example using MCDA integrated with GIS
Yesilnacar, M. Irfan; Süzen, Mehmet Lütfi; Kaya, Basak Sener; DOYURAN, Vedat (2012-01-01)
A municipal solid waste (MSW) management system needs solid waste management (SWM) techniques where the presence of a sanitary landfill is vital. One of the most important issues of sanitary landfilling is to locate the facility to an optimal location. Despite the versatility and case-dependent nature of conventional expert-based site selection procedures, the number of sites to be chosen increases with increased population forcing a number of constraints. Consequently, constraints and environmental regulat...
Current Situation and Future Perspectives in Municipal Wastewater Treatment and Sludge Management in Turkey
Insel, G.; Kendır, E.; Ayol, A.; Erdincler, A.; Arıkan, Osman Atilla; İmamoğlu, İpek; Alagoz, B. A.; Gencsoy, E. B.; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Buyukkamaci, N.; Karatas, O.; Saygılı, G.; Sener, G.; Cokgor, E. U.; Filibeli, A. (2013-07-01)
Appropriate management of wastewater and sludge requires several systems. One of these systems is the collection of data about generation rates and characteristics of sludge. This paper aims to summarize the work done as a part of a threeyear project requested by the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. Efforts involved preparation and evaluation of a detailed questionnaire for currently operated wastewater treatment plants (INWTPs) in Turkey, collection and confirmation of information from vis...
