Classical corrugated waveguide (WG) LP filters with wide rejection bandwidths rely on designing a band stop block with reduced height waveguides augmented by impedance matching blocks at terminations. In this paper direct synthesis approach is used to synthesize the whole filter as a single unit. The initial filter is designed as a TEM mode commensurate length LPF with very high quarter wavelength frequency for size reduction. Filter is made up of series SC stubs interlaced by contributing Unit Elements (UE). Then the filter is converted into its WG equivalent. The finite transmission zeros formed by the SC stubs are spread into the stopband properly to get both steep skirt and high rejection level. Return loss and rejection level is then adjusted by manual tuning of stub lengths and heights of UE's. The resulting filter is then optimized on electromagnetic simulators. A Ku-band filter is designed and implemented as example.

Synthesis of Bandstop filters with ultra wide upper passbands
Yıldırım, Nevzat (2007-06-08)
A new LP Prototype-to-Distributed Bandstop mapping is defined to synthesize BSF's with controllable upper pass bandwidths. The synthesized filters involve resonators made up of commensurate OC and SC stubs coupled by inverters. It is shown that when inverters are approximated by several unit elements (UE) then their contribution to the response increases appreciably upon optimization. Thus, a novel approach is developed which can be used to synthesize BSF's with contributing UE's having ultra wide upper pas...
Waveguide filters with ridged and unequal width resonators
Yıldırım, Nevzat; Hizal, A (2005-06-17)
Analytical expressions are developed for characterization of ridged / finned waveguides for use in the design of direct coupled waveguide filters with ridged and / or unequal width resonators. The analytical expressions are used to control the harmonic passbands and higher order modes. A survey is made for comparison of responses of waveguide filters using unequal width resonators and unequal ridge resonators. it is found that ridged resonators are more effective in suppressing the spurious passbands in the...
On Miniaturization and Performance Improvement of Planar Wideband Bandpass Filters Without Coupled Lines
Alicioglu, Bulent; Yıldırım, Nevzat (2009-10-01)
Two classical approaches are compared in various respects for the design of wideband planar BPF's without parallel coupled lines, namely, BPF's designed by pole placement with contributing Unit Elements (UE) and inverter coupled resonator filters designed from LP prototypes. It is shown that the circuit obtained by direct BP synthesis is a special case of inverter coupled filter with inverters converted into single Unit Elements. It is also shown that if the inverters are converted into odd number of UE's t...
Ring based FIR-IIR best delay LS inverse filters
Aktas, M; Tuncer, Temel Engin (2004-04-30)
In this paper, we investigate the best delay LS inverse filter design problem. We propose FIR-IIR LS inverse filters to improve the LS error performance for the same complexity. Furthermore we present a new approach for the design of FIR-IIR LS inverse filters by using a special selection procedure for the IIR part. We derived the closed form LS error expressions and compared with the practical results in order to effectively show the performance improvement in this case. In general 4-5 dB improvement is ac...
Analysis of root displacement interpolation method for tunable allpass fractional-delay filters
Hacıhabiboğlu, Hüseyin; Günel Kılıç, Banu (2007-10-01)
One of the simplest ways of designing allpass fractional-delay filters with maximally fiat group delays is by using the Thiran approximation by which the filter coefficients are calculated using a closed-form equation. However, due to the number of multiplications and divisions involved, the calculation of these coefficients is a computationally costly task and is not suitable for real-time applications. The analysis of a root-displacement-based interpolation method used in allpass tunable fractional delays...
