Approximately 5x10(6) cubic meter of sediment is removed annually from the harbours, ports, marinas and river mouths in Turkey. Uncontrolled dumping of these dredged materials might create contamination based on the assumption that this material is somehow polluted with the human activity related to the surrounding location. Selection of the disposal sites at sea is one of the important steps of dredge material management process described in most of the international conventions.

Evaluation of eutrophication control strategies for the Keban Dam reservoir
Soyupak, S; Mukhallalati, L; Yemisen, D; Bayar, A; Yurteri, C (1997-04-15)
The reservoir of the Keban Dam in eastern Anatolia is a very deep and large water body subject to significant seasonal water level fluctuations within a given hydrological year. At the present time, different sections of the reservoir have different trophic status and the upper portion of the reservoir, in particular, is eutrophic. In this regard, there is a need for the assessment of alternative strategies to be implemented for phosphorus and thus eutrophication control in this segment of the reservoir. In...
Evaluation of heavy metal contents, polyaromatic petroleum hydrocarbons and some inorganic pollutants in the south Marmara rivers, Turkey
Yılmaz, Ayşen; Yemenicioglu, S; Aksoy, S; Torunoglu, T (1998-05-01)
Nilufer River is the main receiving body of water for the industrial and domestic wastes of 1.000.000 populated Bursa metropolitan area and it combines with Kocasu River before entering the sea at the south Marmara region, Turkey. Variations in concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cl, SO4, PO4, NH4, NO3, NO2, BOD5, COD, polyaromatic petroleum hydrocarbons (PAH), pH and some heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cr, Zn, Pb) were seasonally determined in 1991-94 period. The results showed that these rivers are included in th...
Exploring the dynamics of small pelagic fish catches in the marmara sea in relation to changing environmental and bio-optical parameters
Akoğlu, Ekin (2021-01-01)
The Marmara Sea has a large drainage basin that includes cities with heavy industrialisation and agricultural land use. Therefore, it is under the influence of significant anthropogenic activities that adversely affect the well-being of its ecosystem. The Marmara Sea is also an important fishing ground with many commercially important fish species. These fish species are also under the influence of the adverse impacts of anthropogenic activities. Fisheries catches in the Marmara Sea had experienced severe f...
An evaluation of Surgu Dam response during 5 May 1986 earthquake
Ozkan, MY; Erdik, M; Tuncer, MA; Yilmaz, C (Elsevier BV, 1996-01-01)
Surgu Dam, located in southeast Turkey was subjected to longitudinal cracks on the dam crest and simultaneous settlement on the upstream part of the day, during 5 May 1986 Malatya Earthquake. In the following, a brief account of the 5 May 1986 earthquake and the damage occurred in the dam is reviewed, and the results of a dynamic finite element analysis incorporating the non-linear soil properties are presented. It is observed that, a Newmark type permanent displacement analysis carried out under simulated ...
