(No paper) Pump-and-treat is a common technique for the remediation of contaminated aquifers. However, slow kinetic mass transfer at sites contaminated with organic compounds may reduce the efficiency of the pump-and-treat remediation. Although continuous pumping tends at first to remove high concentrations from an aquifer, it soon removes much lower concentrations due to slow mass transfer from immobile to mobile phases. Pulsed pumping, in which the pump is periodically turned off, has been suggested as a means of reducing the remediation costs where mass transfer limitation is a concern. In this work, optimization of the aquifer remediation costs and design with pulsed pumping will be studied. Pumping rates and the length of pumping period will be the decision variables. Results will be compared for continuous and pulsed pumping with respect to optimal design and costs of remediation.
