Suppressive oligodeoxynucleotides protect mice from lethal endotoxic shock.
Shirota, H; Gursel, I; Gürsel, Mayda; Klinman, DM (The American Association of Immunologists, 2005-04-15)
Endotoxic shock is a life-threatening condition caused by exposure to bacterial LPS. LPS triggers the release of acute phase, proinflammatory, and Th1 cytokines that facilitate the development of endotoxic shock. Synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) expressing suppressive TTAGGG motifs effectively down-regulate the production of proinflammatory and Th1 cytokines elicited by a variety of immune stimuli. The current results demonstrate that suppressive ODN protect mice from LPS-induced endotoxic shock. Under...
Rapid differentiation of MSC into adipocytes and osteocytes is facilitated by Toll-Like receptor engagement
Tas, Ibrahim; Tokcaer-Keskin, Zeynep; Ayhan, Fatma; Gürsel, Mayda; Akcali, Kamil (2010-04-01)
Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent progenitor cells capable of differentiating into several lineages including adipocytes, and osteocytes. While they are regarded as non-immunogenic, accumulating evidence suggests that MSC expresses several TLRs. We checked the contribution of TLR ligands to MSC differentiation. Rat bone marrow derived MSC surface marker and TLR transcript levels were checked by FACS and RT-PCR respectively. MSCs were CD29hi, CD71dim, CD90hi, and negative for CD45 & CD34. They expressed...
Life cycle assessment of two different renewable energy systems for a selected region: Bozcaada island
Şentürk, Ayşe Eylül; Oğuz, Elif (2020-01-01)
Energy production without destroying the environment has been one of the most crucial issues for the people living in today'sworld. In order to analyse whole environmental impacts of energy production process, life cycle assessment (LCA) is widely used. In this study, two distinct renewable energy systems are assessed. First, a land-based wind farm which has been operating in Bozcaada Island since 2000 compared with a proposed solar photovoltaic power plant in terms of Energy Pay-Back Time (EPBT) periods an...
Molecular phylogenetics of Turkish Salix L. species
Acar, Pelin; Kaya, Zeki; Department of Biology (2017)
Chloroplast (trnT-F, matK and rbcL) and nuclear genome (ITS) regions were used to explore the evolutionary relationships of Salix species which are native to Turkey. Morphological analysis with the utilization of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was also carried out. Such a combined sequence data from cpDNA and nrDNA genes enabled reliable subgenus-level classification of Turkish willows (subgenus Salix and Vetrix). Morphological and genetic results agree with traditional taxonomic concepts in clustering ...
Seismic testing of a scaled roller-compacted-concrete gravity dam
Gharibdoust, Ali; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Within the last half-century, seismic response analysis of concrete gravity dams has been extensively studied. Studies reveal that two types of failure modes prevail in the form of dam body cracking or base slide. The literature lacks the conditions that clearly differentiate the two failure types. In this context a state of the art single degree of freedom pseudo-dynamic testing was developed to assess the gravity dam response on smooth foundation interface. Three different hazard levels of earthquake name...
