In defence of Zeytinburnu

2005-06-01
A multiple level assessment of the seismic vulnerability of several thousand buildings in Zeytinburnu, a district in Istanbul with much deficient construction, is presented. Consistent results are obtained from walkdown surveys as well as sophisticated two tier discriminant analyses developed within the framework of NATO SfP project SfP97723 1.

Cost-benefit analysis for various rehabilitation strategies
Çetinceli, Serkan; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Over the last decade, six major earthquakes that occurred in Turkey dramatically demonstrated the poor performance of the buildings that were designed and constructed far from Turkish seismic code̕s requirements. The Marmara region, where most of the population and industry is located, is in the active seismic zone. With the rising cost of damages due to earthquakes, the necessity of the cost-benefit analysis for various rehabilitation strategies used in existing buildings has become a major concern for the...
Role of design control on urban form: Ankara-Çayyolu
Ceylan Kızıltaş, Aybike; Günay, Baykan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2010)
In Turkey while the production of urban space is based on individual plots in the nner areas of the city, urban peripheral areas face development based on the cale of urban block or neighbourhood. Urban disaster risk management with compulsory earthquake insurance in Turkey
Taylan, Arzu; Balamir, Murat; Werner, Ute; Department of City and Regional Planning (2009)
Turkish Compulsory Earthquake Insurance (ZDS) introduced after the 1999 Earthquakes aimed to lower financial burdens of the State and to promote safer building construction. High earthquake risk in Turkey necessitates risk mitigation, in line with the priority of the new international policy. Yet, the ZDS system operates without regard to risk mitigation, and it is far from being a compulsory condition. The ZDS system has low penetration ratios due to expectations of State-aid in the event of a disaster, wh...
