In this study, a bastnaesite type rare earth ore located in Beylikahir in Turkey was used. The total rare earth oxide (REO) content of the deposit is estimated to be 1 million tons with an average concentration of 3.42%REO. The rare earths are contained in bastnaesite mineral. The other constituents of the ore are calcium fluoride (52.5%), barite (25.4%), calcite (2.8%) and minor amounts of thorium, etc. The bastnaesite mineral occurs either as cement material between fluoride and barite particles or is intimately associated with these minerals. The rare earth elements are enriched considerably in sub-sieve sizes. So, the classical concentration and hydrometallurgical methods mentioned in the literature were not applicable alone for the production of marketable bastnaesite concentrate or other products.

Extraction of zinc from smithsonite by ammonia leaching
TALAN, DENİZ; ATALAY, MUSTAFA ÜMİT; Altun, Naci Emre (2017-06-11)
– In this study, an ore taken from Kayseri region of Turkey was used. Characterization studies showed that the run-of mine ore is rich in oxide minerals, cerussite (PbCO3) and smithsonite (ZnCO3). The aim of the study was extraction of zinc from smithsonite by ammonia leaching on cerussite flotation tailings. Initial lead and zinc grades of the ore were 13.31% and 27.86%, respectively. As a result of a series of cerussite flotation tests, a lead concentrate containing 63.25% Pb was produced with 82.76% reco...
Assessment of temporal variation and sources of PCBs in the sediments of Mediterranean Sea, Mersin Bay, Turkey
Gedik, Kadir; İmamoğlu, İpek (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-01)
Information on temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the coastal sediments of Mediterranean Sea, Mersin was compiled using data published between 1980 and 2009, and the present study. The first congener specific PCB results from the region yield concentration levels of Sigma(41) PCBs in sediments ranging from 0.61 to 1.04 ng g(-1). Sediment profiles show penta-, hexa- and hepta-chlorobiphenyls, specifically, #149 and 153 as the most abundant congeners in all samples. Comparison of tot...
Rare earth double sulfates from pre-concentrated bastnasite
Kul, M.; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Karakaya, İshak (2008-08-01)
A mixture of rare earth double sulfates was produced from a Turkish bastnasite-containing pre-concentrate (low grade concentrate) by sulfuric acid baking, subsequent water leaching and precipitation with sodium sulfate. The results of acid baking and leaching indicated that recoveries of rare earth elements up to 90% were readily obtained and the recovery of hydrofluoric acid as a by-product was also possible. Reasonable decontamination of the rare earth double sulfate salt from impurities such as Th, Fe, A...
High-altitude Plio-Quaternary fluvial deposits and their implication on the tilt of a horst, western Anatolia, Turkey
Süzen, Mehmet Lütfi; Rojay, B (Elsevier BV, 2006-03-01)
This study investigates the origin and regional tectonic implications of high-altitude Plio (?)-Quaternary fluvial deposits developed over the Bozdak horst which is an important structural element within the horst-graben system of western Anatolia, Turkey. A total of 23 deposits occur near the modem drainage divide comprising fluvial to occasionally lacustrine deposits. The deposits are all elongated in N-S direction with a width/length ratio of 1/10. The largest of them is of 13 km in length with a maximum...
Acid curing and baking of bastnaesite ore and concentrate
Topkaya, Yavuz Ali (1999-01-01)
In this study, the hydrometallurgical evaluation of a rare earth ore as well as a concentrate obtained from this ore was done in the laboratory. For the mentioned study, a bastnaesite type rare earth ore located in Beylikahir in Turkey was used. The total rare earth oxide (REO) content of the deposit was estimated to be 1 million tons with an average concentration of 3.42% REO. The rare earths were contained in bastnaesite mineral.
