In this study, the effects of 35, 45, and 55 wt.% natural pozzolan addition on the properties of blended cement pastes and mortars were investigated. Blended cements with 450 m(2) /kg Blaine fineness were produced from a Turkish volcanic tuff in a laboratory mill by intergrinding portland cement clinker, natural pozzolan, and gypsum. The cements were tested for particle size distribution, setting time, heat of hydration, compressive strength, alkali-silica activity, and sulfate resistance. Cement pastes were tested by TGA for Ca(OH)(2) content and by XRD for the crystalline hydration products. The compressive strength of the mortars made with blended cements containing large amounts of natural pozzolan was lower than that of the portland cement at all tested ages up to 91 days. Blended cements containing large amounts of pozzolan exhibited much less expansion with respect to portland cement in accelerated alkali-silica test and in a 36-week sulfate immersion test.

Comparison of different yield criteria in various deep drawn cups
Cogun, Ferah; Darendeliler, Haluk (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2017-03-01)
The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of three recent yield criteria namely; BBC2008-8p, Yld2003-8p, Hu2003 through the simulation of the hemispherical, cylindrical and square cup drawing processes by comparing the results with the ones obtained by using the von Mises criterion for the isotropic, kinematic and combined hardening and the Hill'48 criterion. For this purpose, two different sheet materials, SS304 stainless steel and DKP6112 steel, and various punch travels were used in the simulat...
Effect of material characteristics on the properties of blended cements containing high volumes of natural pozzolans
Turanlı, Lutfullah; Uzal, B; Bektas, F (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
The effect of three different natural pozzolans from Turkish deposits on the properties of blended cements produced by intergrinding cement clinker with a high volume of natural pozzolan (55 wt.% of the cementitious material) was investigated. The particle size distribution of blended cements, setting time, heat of hydration, and compressive strength of blended cement mortars were determined. Experimental results showed that the hardness of the pozzolanic material strongly influenced the particle size distr...
Variation in time-to-compliance for pump-and-treat remediation of mass transfer-limited aquifers with hydraulic conductivity heterogeneity
Gungor-Demirci, Gamze; Aksoy, Ayşegül (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-07-01)
In this study, the impact of correlation length (lambda) of hydraulic conductivity (K) heterogeneity on pump-and-treat (P&T) remediation period (time-to-compliance) for a mass transfer-limited aquifer is evaluated. Additionally, impacts of variance (sigma (2)), different distributions of high and low K zones and different initial contaminant masses are explored. Two different P&T policies including different number of wells pumping at different rates are employed for the investigation. Simulation-optimizati...
Impact of B2O3 and La2O3 addition on structural, mechanical and biological properties of hydroxyapatite
KHOSHSİMA, Sina; ALSHEMARY, AMMAR ZEIDAN GHAILAN; Tezcaner, Ayşen; SURDEM, Sedat; Evis, Zafer (2018-01-01)
In this study, hydroxyapatite-B2O3-La2O3 composites (with <= 20 wt.% B2O3 and <= 2 wt.% La2O3) were synthesized via wet precipitation method and calcined at 1100 degrees C for 1 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the existence of the pure hydroxyapatite (HA) phase with high crystallinity. Characteristic absorption bands of HA were also observed in Fourier transform infrared spectra. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated that the addition of B2O3 and La2O3 into HA enhanced t...
Effectiveness of set accelerating admixtures with different cement types
Üstüner, Didem Tuğba; Tokyay, Mustafa; Department of Chemical Engineering (2009)
In this study, effects of different carbon sources and their feeding strategies on recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) production by Pichia pastoris were investigated by means of cell growth, recombinant protein production and expression levels of hGH and alcohol oxidase (AOX) genes. In this content, firstly, the strain to be used for high level rhGH production was selected between the two phenotypes, i.e., P. pastoris hGH-Mut+ and P. pastoris hGH-MutS. In this selection both phenotypes were compared in...
