In this study, hydroxyapatite-B2O3-La2O3 composites (with <= 20 wt.% B2O3 and <= 2 wt.% La2O3) were synthesized via wet precipitation method and calcined at 1100 degrees C for 1 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the existence of the pure hydroxyapatite (HA) phase with high crystallinity. Characteristic absorption bands of HA were also observed in Fourier transform infrared spectra. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated that the addition of B2O3 and La2O3 into HA enhanced the particle growth. Mechanical properties of the composites were studied by diametral tensile test and the results showed that incorporation of 10 wt.% B2O3 and 2 wt.% La2O3 led to a 39% increase in tensile strength (compared to the pure HA). In vitro cytocompatibility of HA-B2O3-La2O3 composites was investigated using Osteosarcoma Cell Lines (Saos-2). Incorporation of B2O3 and La2O3 into HA had no toxic effect towards the cells. Based on its tensile strength properties and biological response, composite of 88 wt.% HA, 10 wt.% B2O3 and 2 wt.% La2O3 was suggested as a promising composite for bone tissue engineering applications.

Effect of large amounts of natural pozzolan addition on properties of blended cements
Turanlı, Lutfullah; Uzal, B; Bektas, F (Elsevier BV, 2005-06-01)
In this study, the effects of 35, 45, and 55 wt.% natural pozzolan addition on the properties of blended cement pastes and mortars were investigated. Blended cements with 450 m(2) /kg Blaine fineness were produced from a Turkish volcanic tuff in a laboratory mill by intergrinding portland cement clinker, natural pozzolan, and gypsum. The cements were tested for particle size distribution, setting time, heat of hydration, compressive strength, alkali-silica activity, and sulfate resistance. Cement pastes wer...
Effect of substituent groups on quinoxaline-based random copolymers on the optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties
CEVHER, ŞEVKİ CAN; HIZALAN, Gonul; TEMIZ, Cansel; Udum, Yasemin Arslan; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Çırpan, Ali (2016-09-28)
In this study, three low band gap donor-acceptor (D-A) type quinoxaline-based random copolymers were synthesized. The effect of varying substituent groups on quinoxaline groups on optoelectronic properties and the performance of bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells was investigated. Electrochemical and optical studies indicate that these copolymers are promising materials for both electrochromic and polymer solar cells applications. Two random polymers were found as excellent candidates for NIR electroch...
Effect of fan and shroud configurations on underhood flow characteristics of an agricultural tractor
Ozturk, Ilhan; Cetin, Cenk; Yavuz, Mehmet Metin (Informa UK Limited, 2019-01-01)
In the current study, effects of two different underhood geometry modifications namely; fan position relative to shroud and fan tip clearance, on airflow through an agricultural tractor engine cooling system are investigated by utilizing CFD modeling. For the characterization of each modification, the underhood components are reduced to a domain of cooling systems including only fan, shroud, and radiator that allows saving in computational time and cost. The models are validated using a custom designed unde...
Estimation of lining thickness around circular shafts
Ozturk, H; Unal, E (2001-06-22)
In this paper, the broken zone developing, around a circular mine shafts and lining pressure is estimated by integrating the results of numerical analysis and the "rock-load height" equation derived from empirical analysis. During numerical modelling studies, the computer program FLAC(2D) was utilized. In order to estimate equivalent Mohr failure Envelope from the generalised Hoek Brown failure criterion, a new FISH function was written within FLAC(2D). Parametric studies were carried out by considering mRM...
CORRELATION OF MICROSTRUCTURE AND FAILURE INITIATING SITES IN AN AISI M2 HIGH-SPEED STEEL USING VICKERS INDENTATION
Ögel, Bilgehan (1990-01-01)
In this study, the relation of crack initiation and propagation to microstructure was shown in an AISI M2 high-speed steel using Vickers hardness indentation. Observations were carried out on the cracks generated from the corners of the square pyramid indentation in both the as-quenched, the quenched and tempered specimens. It is shown that cracks are nucleated from the corners of the indentation by either cleavage of the carbide or by decohesion between the carbide and the matrix, depending on the size o...
