Modeling and simulation of quenching are powerful tools in the design, optimization, and understanding of the quenching process since they provide quantitative results such as the evolution of microstructure and the internal stresses, which are practically impossible to acquire experimentally. The research on simulation of quenching and related phenomena originates from the early 70s and is still an active field owing to its industrial and scientific output. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of those studies and to present the state of the art with a discussion of limitations and drawbacks of contemporary models with an emphasis on the complementary steps that have to be taken in collaboration with the industry.

Optimum design of pın-jointed 3-D dome structures using global optimization techniques
Saraç, Yavuz; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Difficult gradient calculations, converging to a local optimum without exploring the design space adequately, too much dependency on the starting solution, lacking capabilities to treat discrete and mixed design variables are the main drawbacks of conventional optimization techniques. So evolutionary optimization methods received significant interest amongst researchers in the optimization area. Genetic algorithms (GAs) and simulated annealing (SA) are the main representatives of evolutionary optimization m...
Cyclic Large Strain and Induced Pore Pressure Models for Saturated Clean Sands
Çetin, Kemal Önder (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2012-03-01)
Semiempirical probabilistic models are described to assess cyclic large strain and induced excess pore-water pressure responses of fully saturated clean sands. For this purpose, available cyclic simple shear and triaxial tests were compiled and studied. The resulting r(u) versus gamma, and gamma versus N databases are composed of 101 and 84 cyclic test data, respectively. Key parameters of the proposed r(u) and gamma models are defined as critical shear strain, relative density, effective confining stress, ...
A New Mathematical Approach in Environmental and Life Sciences: Gene-Environment Networks and Their Dynamics
Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Alparslan-Gok, S. Z.; Soyler, B. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-04-01)
An important research area in life sciences is devoted to modeling, prediction, and dynamics of gene-expression patterns. As clearly understood in these days, this enterprise cannot become satisfactory without acknowledging the role of the environment. To a representation of past, present, and most likely future states, we also encounter measurement errors and uncertainties. This paper surveys and improves recent advances in understanding the foundations and interdisciplinary implications of the newly intro...
Meta-Modeling of Complexity-Uncertainty-Performance Triad in Construction Projects
Dikmen Toker, İrem; Erol, Huseyin; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Informa UK Limited, 2020-07-01)
Although conceptualized in various ways within the project management literature, complexity is usually identified as one of the drivers of uncertainty, which may result in deviations from the expected project performance in the construction industry. Effective strategies to manage risk and complexity can only be formulated by understanding the complexity-uncertainty-performance triad in construction projects and modeling the non-linear interactions between these factors. In this study, a meta-modeling appr...
