The aims of this study are to form a liquid membrane suitable for the extraction of strontium ions from aqueous solutions and to determine the factors influencing the stability of the membrane, the extraction efficiency and the rate of transport. The suggested membrane is composed of kerosene, Span 80 and D2EHPA. It has been observed that the extraction efficiency and the rate of transport increase with increasing ratio of emulsion to outer phase volume, stirring rate and D2EHPA concentration and decreasing pH of the inner phase. As the strontium ion concentration in the outer phase increases, the transport rate increases but the separation efficiency decreases. The maximum separation efficiency achieved in the experiments was 92%.

Preparation of MFI type zeolite membranes in a flow system with circulation of the synthesis solution
Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Kalıpçılar, Halil (2006-06-20)
MFI type zeolite membranes were prepared on seeded tubular alumina supports in a flow system where the synthesis solution was circulated through the support with flow rates of 6, 24 and 48 mL/min. Syntheses were carried out using clear solutions, at 80 degrees C and 95 degrees C at atmospheric pressure in the flow system, and at autogeneous pressure in the batch system. The membranes synthesized in the flow system had thickness of 1-2 mu m, and were thinner than the membranes synthesized in the batch system...
Application of semi conductor films over glass/ceramic surfaces and their low temperature photocatalytic activity
Ersöz, Tuğçe İrfan; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2009)
Semiconductor metal oxides can be induced by light with proper wavelength resulting in oxidation and reduction reactions for the transformation of water and oxygen molecules into active radicals. With this method, it is possible to obtain self-cleaning surfaces and products having antimicrobial properties. The aim of this study is to develop semiconductor metal oxide thin films for multifunctional glass products and the characterization of photocatalytic self cleaning and antimicrobial properties. As semico...
GAS PERMEATION CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYMER-ZEOLITE MIXED MATRIX MEMBRANES
SUER, MG; BAC, N; Yılmaz, Levent (1994-05-20)
Mixed matrix membranes of polyethersulfone (PES), a glassy polymer, and hydrophilic zeolites 13X and 4A were prepared by using different membrane preparation procedures. Using selected procedure (c), the permeation rates of N2, O2, Ar, CO2 and H-2 were measured with a variety of membranes prepared at different zeolite loadings. Significant differences in measured permeability and calculated selectivity values demonstrated the importance of the type and percentage of zeolite. For both zeolitic additives, per...
Investigation of phase inversion behavior of cellulose- ionic liquid solutions in relationship with membrane formation
Durmaz, Elif Nur; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Department of Chemical Engineering (2017)
Cellulose membranes were produced from ionic liquid solutions by phase inversion technique and thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the process were investigated to relate these to membrane morphology and performance. In thermodynamics part, polymer-solvent, polymer-nonsolvent and polymer-solvent-nonsolvent interactions were examined experimentally, together with Hansen solubility parameter estimations. Kinetics part consisted of measuring phase inversion rate. Obtained membranes were characterized by their...
Synthesis of CuO nanostructures on zeolite-Y and investigation of their CO2 adsorption properties
Boruban, Cansu; Nalbant Esentürk, Emren (2017-10-01)
Copper(II) oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) in two different morphologies, spiky and spherical, were synthesized on zeolite-Y by a modified impregnation method, and their CO2 adsorbing capabilities were investigated under standard conditions (1 atm and 298 K). The properties and CO2 adsorption performances of the hybrid systems were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic absorption s...
