International Perspectives on the State-as-Parent: Naive Idealism or Reluctant Pragmatism
Dixon, John; Welbourne, Penelope (Wiley, 2016-03-01)
Too many children remain at risk of harm, regrettably, in all too many societies. This is despite the almost universal acceptance of the 1990 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Its intention, arguably somewhat naively, is to create two state imperatives: to protect children against threats of harm; and to advance their welfare. Governments, however, have evidenced a pragmatic reluctance to meet these challenges, perhaps a product of conflicting community expectations on the approp...
Child Poverty and Youth Unemployment in Turkey
Bayırbağ, Mustafa Kemal; Göksel, Asuman (Wiley, 2018-09-01)
This article investigates the nature, causes, and consequences of child poverty and youth unemployment in Turkey, which is a transition country between the East and the West. The article places a special emphasis on how the post-1980 neoliberal turn has shaped the policy orientation of successive governments, and transformed the nature of child poverty and youth unemployment in Turkey, making t...

Intermarriage between Turks and Kurds in contemporary Turkey: Inter-ethnic relations in an urbanizing environment
Hoşgör, Hatice Ayşe (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2002-12-01)
Data from the Turkish Demographic and Health Surveys are used to study Turkish-Kurdish intermarriage in contemporary Turkey. We find a strong tendency to marry within the own ethnic group (or towards 'ethnic homogamy') which, however, has decreased significantly between the early 1960s and the late 1990s. So, in spite of the conflict in south-eastern Turkey, the groups seem to have grown together somewhat in recent decades. This result remains intact if we control for the difference in group size between th...

BURAKGAZI, Sevinc Gelmez; Yıldırım, Ali (SAGE Publications, 2014-04-01)
This qualitative phenomenological study aims to investigate fourth and fifth graders' uses of mass media (TV, newspapers, Internet, magazines) and to assess their various features as sources for science learning. The data were collected from 47 purposefully selected students through focus groups and were analyzed through qualitative analysis using uses and gratifications theory as a conceptual framework. The results indicated that students were active in choosing and utilizing media to meet their cognitive,...
