This study analyzes the marine policy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in achieving sustainable development goal 14, life below water. The United Nations (UN) definition of SDG 14 provides an international framework for the protection of coastal ecosystems with a particular emphasis on sustainable fishery. However, several targets included in this goal are ambiguous, where comparative data does not exist in UN databases. Bertelsmann-Stiftung sustainable development and Ocean Health Index (OHI) databases support alternative indicators with reliable data, thereby providing better insights. Notably, the indicators listed in OHI are more comprehensive, providing better assessment for measuring national progress towards sustaining the life below water.

Forecasting production of fossil fuel sources in Turkey using a comparative regression and ARIMA model
Ediger, Volkan S.; Akar, Sertac; Ugurlu, Berkin (Elsevier BV, 2006-12-01)
This study aims at forecasting the most possible curve for domestic fossil fuel production of Turkey to help policy makers to develop policy implications for rapidly growing dependency problem on imported fossil fuels. The fossil fuel dependency problem is international in scope and context and Turkey is a typical example for emerging energy markets of the developing world. We developed a decision support system for forecasting fossil fuel production by applying a regression, ARIMA and SARIMA method to the ...
An NGO role in enhancing integrated coastal management in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: The MEDCOAST experience
Ozhan, E (Elsevier BV, 2000-01-01)
In the early 1990s, integrated coastal management (ICM) in the Mediterranean basin found general acceptance as an important issue both at national and international levels, and since then it has been, though slowly, steadily developed. Donor organizations such as the European Union and the World Bank, and the UNEP's Mediterranean Action Plan played catalyst roles in this development by initiating and supporting pilot projects. In 1992, the European Union launched the Mediterranean programs in which the envi...
The merit order effect of wind and river type hydroelectricity generation on Turkish electricity prices
Acar, Berkan; Selcuk, Orhun; Dastan, Seyit Ali (Elsevier BV, 2019-09-01)
The environmental concerns and dependency on gas imports push Turkish policy makers to find ways of increasing the share of renewable sources in electricity generation. Providing incentives for renewable energy in the form of feed-in-tariffs is one of the measures to achieve this goal. Basing on the data of Turkish electricity market operator, we quantified the magnitude of the price effects of wind and river type hydro generations on hourly average of day-ahead prices. We find that wind and river type hydr...
Evaluating the success of public participation in water resources management: five key constituents
Oezerol, Guel; Newig, Jens (IWA Publishing, 2008-01-01)
Public participation ( PP) is increasingly expected to enhance the effectiveness of water resources management. This is recognized in recent legislation such as the European Union Water Framework Directive. We identify five key constituents that affect the success of PP processes and which can be used as indicators thereof. These comprise: 1) the scope of the participants; 2) communication with the public; 3) capacity building; 4) timing; and 5) financing of participation. They are based on the management o...
Characterization of lead-resistant river isolate Enterococcus faecalis and assessment of its multiple metal and antibiotic resistance
Aktan, Yasin; Tan, Sema; İçgen, Bülent (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-06-01)
Contamination of surface waters has a direct impact on the public health of entire communities. Microorganisms inhabiting contaminated surface waters have developed mechanisms of coping with a variety of toxic metals and drugs. Investigations were carried out to isolate and identify lead-resistant bacteria from the river KA +/- zA +/- lA +/- rmak along the city of KA +/- rA +/- kkale, Turkey. Of the 33 lead-resistant isolates, one isolate with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 1,200 mg L-1 was isolated ...
