The temperature induced effects of fish oil on dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) model membranes (fish oil/lipid ratio: 2% w/w) were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) smd UV/Visible spectroscopic techniques. In FTIR study the C-H and C=O stretching modes were investigated. The results of the FTIR study reveals that fish oil changes the physical properties of the DPPC multilamellar liposomes by broadening the phase transition profile and increasing the bandwidth of the CH2 stretching bands. Those results imply respectively that fish oil interacts with the cooperativity region (C2-C8) of the fatty acyl chain and increases the dynamics of the acyl chains. At this fish oil/lipid ratio, fish oil decreases the main phase transition temperature to lower degrees. No significant change in the frequency of the CH2 stretching bands is observed implying that fish oil does not change the number of gauche conformers, i.e., does not make any significant effect on the order of the membrane. Investigation of the C=O band reveals that fish oil does not make hydrogen bonding with the C=O group of phospholipid. Turbidity studies were performed at 550 nm. With the addition of fish oil, main phase transition temperature shifts to lower degrees and a dramatic decrease in absorbance values were observed indicating that fish oil increases the fluidity of the membrane. The results of turbidity studies are consistent with the FTIR study.

FTIR studies of temperature influence on the DPPG model membrane
Severcan, Feride; Dorohoi, Dana-Ortansa (Elsevier BV, 2008-09-17)
The thermal changes induced in dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG) model membranes were studied by FIR technique. When temperature increases, the DPPG model membrane passes from a high ordered gel phase to a few ordered liquid crystalline phase. The very quick passing between the two phases is characterized by the main phase transition temperature at which the bilayers contain equal percentages of ordered and disordered phospholipids. The main phase transition induces important changes in the symmetric...
Vibrational frequencies studied as a function of pressure in phase II of solid benzene
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; Kilit, E. (Elsevier BV, 2011-05-03)
The pressure dependence of the vibrational frequencies of six Raman modes is analyzed in phase II of solid benzene. The frequency shifts 1/nu(partial derivative nu/partial derivative P)(T) of those Raman modes are deduced from this analysis and they are related to the isothermal compressibility kappa(T)= -(1/V)(partial derivative V/partial derivative P)(T) through a constant isothermal mode Gruneisen parameter gamma(T) in phase II of solid benzene. The kappa(T) values predicted here are compared with the ka...
Pressure dependence of the Raman frequencies for the modes I, II and III at constant temperatures in phase II of benzene
Ozdemir, H.; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (Elsevier BV, 2015-01-25)
We study here the pressure dependence of the Raman frequencies for different modes in phase II of benzene at constant temperatures. By using the experimental data for the volume, we calculate the Raman frequency as a function of pressure at constant temperatures through the isothermal mode Gruneisen parameter for the modes studied. Our calculations show that the Raman frequencies predicted, agree well with the observed frequencies for the modes in phase II of benzene. The isothermal mode Gruneisen parameter...
Melatonin induces opposite effects on order and dynamics of anionic DPPG model membranes
Sahin, Ipek; Severcan, Feride; Kazanci, Nadide (Elsevier BV, 2007-05-27)
The temperature and concentration induced effects of melatonin on anionic dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DPPG) multilamellar liposomes (MLVs) were investigated by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that melatonin does not perturb the phase transition profile, while a decrease in the main transition temperature (T-m) is noticed at high melatonin concentrations (15, 24 and 30 mol Low concentrations of melatonin (3, 6 and 9 mol ...
FTIR spectroscopic characterization of irradiated hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.)
Dogan, Ayca; Siyakus, Galip; Severcan, Feride (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-01)
Radiation induced molecular changes in macromolecular components of hazelnut tissues were investigated by mid-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Irradiation dose of 1.5 kGy (low) and 10 kGy (high) were applied. The changes in frequency, signal intensity and intensity ratio of IR bands revealed that the unsaturated lipid concentration increased for low dose treated samples whereas it decreased and peroxidation appeared at high dose treatment. The low dose irradiation treatment, slightly increase...
