In this work, ZrW(2)O(8)-ZrO(2) core-shell composite particles were synthesized. ZrW(2)O(8) that was used in the core is a material with negative coefficient of thermal expansion, and it was synthesized from a high-pH precursor based on use of tungstic acid and zirconium acetate. Shell layer was composed of ZrO(2) nanocrystallites and precipitated from an aqueous solution by urea hydrolysis. While volume of the shell was effectively controlled by the initial zirconium ion concentration in the solutions, the rate of precipitation was a function of the ratio of initial concentrations of urea to zirconium ions. It is hypothesized that isolation of the ZrW(2)O(8) within a layer of ZrO(2), will be a key element in solving problems associated with reactivity of ZrW(2)O(8) towards other components in sintering of ceramic-ceramic composites with tuned or zero thermal expansion coefficient. Structural and temperature-dependent optical properties of thermally evaporated CdS thin films
IŞIK, MEHMET; Gullu, H. H.; Delice, S.; Parlak, Mehmet; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Elsevier BV, 2019-04-01)
In this work, structural and temperature dependent optical properties of thermally evaporated CdS thin films were investigated. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy experiments were carried out to characterize the thin films and obtain information about the crystal structure, atomic composition, surface morphology and vibrational modes. Temperature-dependent transmission measurements were performed in between 10 and 300 K and in the spectral range of 400-1050 nm. The anal...
A study of phase stability and mechanical properties of hydroxylapatite-nanosize alpha-alumina composites
Evis, Zafer (Elsevier BV, 2007-04-01)
Hydroxylapatite (HA)-nanosize alumina composites were synthesized to study their phase stability and mechanical properties. To make these composites, nanosize alpha-Al2O3 powder was used because of its better sinterability and densification as compared to nanosize gamma-Al2O3. The composites were air sintered without pressure and hot pressed in vacuum at 1100 degrees C and 1200 degrees C. In the composites, HA decomposed to tricalcium phosphate faster after the air sintering than hot pressing. Moreover, hex...
Improvement of fracture resistance in a glass matrix optomechanical composite by minicomposite unit bridging
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (Elsevier BV, 2005-10-15)
Minicomposite unit bridging, which was experimentally determined to be the dominant toughening mechanism resulting in the R-curve behavior of the Al2O3-ZrO2 minicomposite-reinforced glass matrix optomechanical composite, was studied quantitatively using luminescence spectroscopy. Applied stress induced shift of the luminescence bands of the minicomposite reinforcement was calibrated. Using the experimentally obtained calibration curve, axial stresses could be mapped along the minicomposite embedded in the g...
Structural, electrical and anisotropic properties of Tl4Se3S chain crystals
QASRAWI, ATEF FAYEZ HASAN; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Elsevier BV, 2009-10-01)
The structure, the anisotropy effect on the current transport mechanism and the space charge limited current in Tl4Se3S chain crystals have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction, electrical conductivity measurements along and perpendicular to the crystal's c-axis and the current voltage characteristics. The temperature-dependent electrical conductivity analysis in the region of 150-400 K, revealed the domination of the thermionic emission of charge carriers over the chain boundaries above 210 and 270 K...
Synthesis and characterization of a new soluble conducting polymer and its electrochromic device
Varis, Serhat; Ak, Metin; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Akhmedov, Idris Mecidoglu; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2006-12-01)
A mixture of isomers 2,5-di(4-methyl-thiophen-2-yl)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-pyrrole, 2-(4-methyl-thiophen-2-yl)-5-(3-methyl-thiophen-2-yl)1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-pyrrole and 2,5-di(3-methyl-thiophen-2-yl)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-pyrrole (Me-SNS(NO2)) were synthesized. Resulting monomers were polymerized chemically, producing soluble polymers in common organic solvents. The average molecular weight has been determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as Mn = 5.6 x 10(3) for the chemically synthesized polymer. T...
