Purification of bentonite clays and their modification with two thermally stable (alkyl and aryl) phosphonium organic salts were investigated. The organoclays were subsequently melt compounded with Polyamide 66 (PA66), with and without the use of an elastomeric compatibilizer. The morphology, melt flow, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the binary and ternary nanocomposites were studied. The bentonite clay was purified by sedimentation, resulting in higher cation exchange capacity and thermal stability in comparison with unpurified clay. These were then used in the synthesis of two thermally stable organoclays by replacing the interlayer sodium cations with two (alkyl and aryl) phosphonium surfactant cations to circumvent the problem of low temperature decomposition of quaternary ammonium organoclays usually used in polymer nanocomposites. The organoclay with aliphatic groups showed more compatibility with PA66 in comparison with the organoclay with aromatic groups. Thus, the use of organoclay with aliphatic groups resulted in nanocomposites with higher tensile strength, higher modulus, higher elongation at break, and higher impact strength in comparison with the nanocomposites produced from the organoclay with aromatic groups. Speciation of Arsenic in Fish by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry
Ozcan, Sefika; BAKIRDERE, Sezgin; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (2016-01-01)
Arsenic speciation in fish was performed using isocratic elution with cation exchange column high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry detection. The separation of arsenobetaine and dimethylarsinic acid was performed in 12 min. DOLT-4 dogfish liver and NIST RM-50 albacore tuna certified reference materials were used to evaluate the accuracy for the determination of total arsenic in fish. In addition, reference materials were analyzed for arsenobetaine and dimeth...
Investigation of biologically important small molecules: quantum chemical and molecular dynamics calculations
Tekin, Emine Deniz; Erkoç, Şakir; Department of Physics (2010)
In this thesis, six small molecules (S-allylcysteine, S-allyl mercaptocysteine, allicin, methyl propyl disulfide, allyl methyl sulfide and dipropylsulfide) that are found in garlic and onion, and are known to be beneficial for human health were studied using molecular mechanics, semi-empirical methods, ab-initio (Restricted Hartree Fock), and density functional theory. Using the same methods, a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide molecule, called cyfluthrin, was also studied. Structural, vibrational and electron...
Viscoelastic properties of reactive and non-reactive styrene-maleic anhydride olefinic blends
Bayram, G; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Xanthos, M (2000-05-11)
Reactive blends of styrene-maleic anhydride (SMAH) with polyethylene/methyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate (PE-F) and non-reactive blends of SMAH with polyethylene/methyl acrylate (PE-NF) were produced and characterized in terms of morphology and viscoelastic properties in order to understand the reaction characteristics between anhydride/epoxy functional groups. Storage modulus, G', loss modulus, G " and complex viscosity, eta* of reactive blends at 25 % and 50 % PE-F were higher than those of non-reactive...
Electrochemical behaviour and electrochemical polymerization of fluoro-substituted anilines
Cihaner, A; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (2002-08-01)
The electrochemical behaviour of three fluoro-substituted aniline monomers, 2-fluoroaniline (2FAN), 3-fluoroaniline (3FAN) and 4-fluoroaniline (4FAN), was investigated in aqueous acidic and organic media by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Constant potential electrolysis (CPE) of the monomers in acetonitrile-water mixture (1: 1 by volume) using NaClO4 as supporting electrolyte yielded soluble polymers. The mechanism of electrochemical polymerization was investigated using in situ electron spin reso...
Speciation of Selenium in Supplements by High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry
BAKIRDERE, Sezgin; Volkan, Mürvet; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (2015-06-13)
Anion and cation exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used for speciation of selenium in supplements. All the parameters in the extraction, separation, and determination procedures were optimized. Recovery studies for the selenium species from the anion and cation exchange columns were performed and there were no analyte losses. Limits of detection for selenium(IV), selenium(VI), Se in selenomethionine, and Se in sele...
