In this study sinterability of the two class F fly ashes were investigated as a function of sintering temperature and sintering time. For this aim, Catalagzi and Sugozu thermal power plant fly ashes resulted from burning of bituminous coals were first pressed into cylindrical specimen, and then sintered to form ceramic materials without the addition of any materials like organic binders or inorganic additives. Sintering efficiency was evaluated in terms of ceramic specifications such as density, water absorption, shrinkage and splitting tensile strength. Furthermore, phase developments and microstructural changes due to sintering process were determined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. Overall results have shown that Sugozu fly ash seems to have better sintering properties than Catalagzi fly ash due to the better microcrystalline structure, higher density and strength with the lower porosity, water absorption and shrinkage values.

Characterization and utilization potential of class F fly ashes
Acar, İlker; Atalay, Mustafa Ümit; Department of Mining Engineering (2013)
In this thesis, characterization of two class F fly ashes (FA) from Çatalağzı and Sugözü thermal power plants were carried out and their utilization potentials in three different fields were examined. Characterization of sintered samples and determination of their utilization potentials in ceramic industry is the first research area in this thesis. For this purpose, the class F fly ash samples were first pressed into cylindrical specimen without the addition of any organic binders or inorganic additives, an...
Processing and microstructural characterization of liquid phase sintered tungsten-nickel-cobalt heavy alloys
DINCER, Onur; PEHLIVANOGLU, M. Kaan; CALISKAN, N. Kaan; Karakaya, İshak; Kalkanlı, Ali (2015-05-01)
In this.study, the effects of composition and sintering temperature on the microstructural characteristics of liquid phase sintered 90W-Ni-Co alloys were investigated. 90W-Ni-Co alloys having Ni/Co ratios of 3/1, 4/1 and 6/1 were examined. It was found that the alloys studied have reached almost to full density when sintered at and above 1475 degrees C. The microstructures of the alloys were typical of liquid phase sintered alloys, which consisted of rounded, nearly pure W grains embedded in a ternary Ni-Co...
Influence of fly ash composition on non-gray particle radiation in combusting systems
Ates, CİHAN; Selçuk, Nevin; Külah, Görkem (2018-08-01)
In this study, chemical composition dependency of both radiative properties of ash particles and radiative heat exchange are investigated for conditions typically encountered in industrial coal-fired furnaces. For that purpose, chemical composition dependent / independent complex index of refraction models are utilized to evaluate (i) spectral particle absorption efficiencies, scattering efficiencies and asymmetry factors, (ii) particle cloud properties representing pulverized coal fired furnaces (PC-Fired)...
Development of Hydrogen Separation Membrane in Palladium Based Ternary Systems
Köse, Mehmet Mert; Öztürk, Tayfur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-1-25)
A study was carried out into dense metallic membranes for hydrogen separation. Two palladium-based system were characterized Pd-Mn-Ag and Pd-Co-Ni. Membranes were produced via sputter deposition in combinatorial geometry. For this purpose, sputter targets were arranged in triangular manner, and there were total of 21 substrates just above the targets. Membranes were screened via resistivity measurements under argon and hydrogen carried out up to 450 oC. A reactivity index defined as resistivity under hydrog...
Determination of kinetic parameters and hydrogen desorption characteristics of MgH2-10 wt% (9Ni-2Mg-Y) nano-composite
Pourabdoli, Mehdi; Raygan, Shahram; Abdizadeh, Hossein; Üner, Deniz (2013-09-10)
Hydrogen desorption kinetic parameters of MgH2 compounds were measured and compared with published gas solid reaction models. The compounds investigated in this study were as-received MgH2, ball milled MgH2, and MgH2 ball milled with 9Ni-2Mg-Y catalyst compound. It was determined that different models were necessary to fit the hydrogen desorption data collected at different temperatures on the same sample, indicating that desorption mechanisms changed with respect to temperature. Addition of (9Ni-2Mg-Y) all...
