The concentration-induced effects of melatonin on distearoyl phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) model membranes were investigated by using two different non-invasive techniques, namely Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). An investigation of the C-H, C=O and PO2- double bond stretching mode in FTIR spectra and DSC studies reveals that the inclusion of melatonin changes the physical properties of the DSPC multilamellar liposomes (MLVs) by shifting the main phase transition to lower temperatures, abolishing the pretransition, ordering the system in the gel phase and slightly disordering the system in the liquid crystalline phase, increasing the dynamics both in the gel phase and liquid crystalline phases. Melatonin also causes strong hydrogen bonding between C=O and PO2- groups of lipids and the water molecules around.

Melatonin induces opposite effects on order and dynamics of anionic DPPG model membranes
Sahin, Ipek; Severcan, Feride; Kazanci, Nadide (Elsevier BV, 2007-05-27)
The temperature and concentration induced effects of melatonin on anionic dipalmitoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DPPG) multilamellar liposomes (MLVs) were investigated by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that melatonin does not perturb the phase transition profile, while a decrease in the main transition temperature (T-m) is noticed at high melatonin concentrations (15, 24 and 30 mol Low concentrations of melatonin (3, 6 and 9 mol ...
Estimation of protein secondary structure from FTIR spectra using neural networks
Severcan, M; Severcan, Feride; Haris, PI (Elsevier BV, 2001-05-30)
Secondary structure of proteins have been predicted using neural networks (NN) from their Fourier transform infrared spectra. Leave-one-out approach has been used to demonstrate the applicability of the method. A form of cross-validation is used to train NN to prevent the overfitting problem. Multiple neural network outputs are averaged to reduce the variance of predictions. The networks realized have been tested and rms errors of 7.7% for alpha -helix, 6.4% for beta -sheet and 4.8% for turns have been achi...
FTIR and turbidity studies of fish oil-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine model membrane interactions
Severcan, Feride; Bayari, S; Karahan, D (Elsevier BV, 1999-05-04)
The temperature induced effects of fish oil on dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) model membranes (fish oil/lipid ratio: 2% w/w) were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) smd UV/Visible spectroscopic techniques. In FTIR study the C-H and C=O stretching modes were investigated. The results of the FTIR study reveals that fish oil changes the physical properties of the DPPC multilamellar liposomes by broadening the phase transition profile and increasing the bandwidth of the CH2 stretching ban...
Analysis of the Raman frequencies close to the lambda-phase transition in NH4Cl
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (Elsevier BV, 2007-05-27)
This study gives our analysis of the Raman frequencies for the lattice modes of v(5)TO(174 cm(-1)), v(5)TO(144 cm(-1)) and v(7)TA(93 cm(-1)), and an internal mode of v(2)(1708 cm(-1)) as functions of temperature in NH4Cl close to its lambda-phase transition (T-lambda = 241.2 K, P = 0). This analysis is performed using a power-law formula with the critical exponent beta for the order parameter according to the soft mode-hard mode coupling model.
Vibrational frequencies studied as a function of pressure in phase II of solid benzene
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; Kilit, E. (Elsevier BV, 2011-05-03)
The pressure dependence of the vibrational frequencies of six Raman modes is analyzed in phase II of solid benzene. The frequency shifts 1/nu(partial derivative nu/partial derivative P)(T) of those Raman modes are deduced from this analysis and they are related to the isothermal compressibility kappa(T)= -(1/V)(partial derivative V/partial derivative P)(T) through a constant isothermal mode Gruneisen parameter gamma(T) in phase II of solid benzene. The kappa(T) values predicted here are compared with the ka...
