The Astrodynamics Network (ASTRONET-II)

2015-12-31
The objectives of the proposal are: - To introduce ESR's and ER'sto a range of astrodynamical concepts and problems and the relevant new mathematical theories and techniques. To develop their expertise in a number of these fields and to train them to conduct research, collaborate, and communicate their results. - To deepen and and broaden the knowledge and skills of ER's working in the areas of astrodynamics and dynamical systems theory. To encourage the more mathematical scientists to apply their skills to spacecraft dynamics and control, and the more applied scientists to apply new ideas and theories from mathematics to their problems - To provide both ESR's and ER's with the complementary communications and project management skills that are needed, in addition to scientific skills, for a successful career in either an academic or a non-academic enviroment.

A survey on OR and mathematical methods applied on gene-environment networks
Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Kropat, Erik; Öztürk, Başak; Gorgulu, Zafer-Korcan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-09-01)
In this paper, we survey the recent advances and mathematical foundations of gene-environment networks. We explain their interdisciplinary implications with special regard to human and life sciences as well as financial sciences. Special attention is paid to applications in Operational Research and environmental protection. Originally developed in the context of modeling and prediction of gene-expression patterns, gene-environment networks have proved to provide a conceptual framework for the modeling of dy...
The Heuristic role of questions in the formation of research programmes: Copernicus’s heliocentric system
Altuğ, Sezen; Bağçe, Samet; Department of Philosophy (2016)
The aim of this thesis is to develop a critical view about the notion of the heuristic in Lakatos’s methodology of research programmes. The heuristic is tried to be sterilized from its defects with an insight derived from different forms of theories dealing with questions. For that reason, a short survey which includes Socratic dialogues, Hintikka’s theory of interrogative games, van Fraassen’s theory of why-questions, and Laudan’s analogy between science and problem-solving activity is introduced. As a res...
Hybrid wavelet-neural network models for time series data
Kılıç, Deniz Kenan; Uğur, Ömür; Department of Financial Mathematics (2021-3-3)
The thesis aims to combine wavelet theory with nonlinear models, particularly neural networks, to find an appropriate time series model structure. Data like financial time series are nonstationary, noisy, and chaotic. Therefore using wavelet analysis helps better modeling in the sense of both frequency and time. S&P500 (∧GSPC) and NASDAQ (∧ IXIC) data are divided into several components by using multiresolution analysis (MRA). Subsequently, each part is modeled by using a suitable neural network structure. ...
Development of an elasto-plastic analytical model for design of grouted rock bolts in tunnels with particular reference to poor rock masses
Osgoui, Reza Rangsaz; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Mining Engineering (2007)
The analysis presented in this thesis provides a methodology for grouted bolts design, based on empirical and analytical methods. Hence, the main objectives of this thesis are to offer practical means for better characterisation of poor to very poor rock masses, to better predict support pressure, and to develop an elasto-plastic analytical model for design of grouted bolts in tunnels excavated in such rock masses. To improve the applicability of the GSI (Geological Strength Index) in poor to very poor rock...
A critical evaluation of governance in the framework of rural development in Turkey
Kovancı Shehrin, Petek; Adalı, Orhan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2005)
This thesis attempts to construct a cross-section of governance with a critical viewpoint and an interdisciplinary approach, with a focus to planning. Governance is discussed by underlining the diversity of the underlying processes in social sciences, regarding various recent and important aspects of theoretical and conceptual discussions and subsequently rendering them measurable within the framework of the planning agenda. This thesis constitutes an effort in planning whereby the common denominator focuse...
