Design and Implementation of Optimal Management Systems for European Fisheries (DIOMFISH)

2010-9-1
The purpose of this research project is to develop an optimal management mechanism for the economic and social sustainability of European fisheries. Throughout the project, development and feasibility of a rights based management mechanism which efficiently allocates the fishing rights in Member States will be investigated. This mechanism will not have a high data demanding characteristic and will also be adaptable to other regions of fisheries in the third countries. Currently, Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the European Union`s instrument for the management of fisheries and aquaculture. As the third section in the Green Paper on the reform of the CFP pointed, European fisheries are eroding their own ecological and economic basis due to overfishing. Therefore, objectives to achieve sustainable fisheries have not been met overall and policy reform is needed to ensure that CFP will reach its objectives. The proposed mechanism will surely help to successfully implement the principles and objectives of the CFP by aligning the interests of the fishermen and those of the Commission. Moreover, the planned study has the potential to significantly improve the currently applied traditional fisheries management systems. Successful adaptation of the proposed management mechanism under the future of the CFP will promote sustainable fisheries in the EU.

Analysis of public use bicycle systems from a product-service system perspective
Keskin, Duygu; Börekçi, Naz Ayşe Güzide Z.; Department of Industrial Design (2006)
Recent studies on sustainability indicate that the concept of the Product-Service System (PSS) is a promising approach to dematerialise the economy and reduce the environmental impacts of industrial activity. Considering the urban scale, mobility is one of the challenges that should be addressed and improved for a better quality of life for residents and lower pollution levels for the environment. In this respect, this study aims at analysing Public Use Bicycle (PUB) systems from a PSS perspective. Six PUB ...
Assessment of Model Uncertainty in the Prediction of Seasonal and Annual Variability in the Black Sea
Salihoğlu, Barış; Fach, Bettina Andrea; Akoğlu, Ekin (2016-02-15)
A new generation (circulation, biogeochemical and a higher trophic level) model for the Black Sea was developed to provide an integrated analysis of ecosystem attributes that contributes to policy oriented criteria's of the European Union's ambitious Marine Strategy Framework Directive towards achieving Good Environmental Status by 2020. The biogeochemical model, including the carbonate module, comprises thirty state variables. The higher trophic level model includes thirteen fish species. The model system ...
Implementation of the maximum sustainable yield under an age structured model
Zafer, Kanık; Küçükşenel, Serkan (2013-06-28)
One of the main goals stated in the proposals for the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) reform is achieving maximum sustainable yield (MSY) for all European fisheries by 2015. In this paper, we consider the mechanism design problem for allocation of fishing rights to achieve MSY harvesting conditions. We study an age-structured fish population model and apply this model for a fishing environment including two fishermen having perfect or imperfect fishing selectivity. If we assume that fishermen are non-satiated...
Increasing role of services in competitive power and innovativeness of firms and industrial clusters
Eraydın, Ayda (2007-01-01)
The aim of this paper is to discuss the importance of different types of global services for industrial firms and clusters in terms of their economic competitiveness and innovative performance. The theoretical debates argue that globalization, deregulation and the new production organization make it necessary to use global services that are supplied easily with the help of new telecommunication technologies. The existing empirical studies provide some supporting evidence. However, they also indicate that gl...
Climate change impacts on primary production and economically important fish stocks in the Black Sea
Küçükavşar, Selin; Yılmaz, Ayşen; Ercan, Hakan; Department of Earth System Science (2013)
Coastal urbanization, heavy nutrient/pollutant loads due to intense anthropogenic activities and unsustainable fisheries have been threatening life-support system of marine environment and getting more drastic with the climatic variations and its impacts. Changes in sea surface temperatures and related dynamical processes have been threatening bottom-up / top-down control of marine food webs via variations in primary production and changes in biogeographic and temporal responses of thermophilic species. All...
