Bu özel sayının amacı Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ne geçişi farklı yönleriyle irdelemektir. Şüphesiz ki, Cumhuriyet’in ilk yılları üzerine çalışan sosyal bilimciler Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son dönemine ilişkin tartışmaları analizlerinde kullanmaktadırlar.

This article examines the reasons, consequences and penetration ways of the nationalist movement in the lands that made up the Ottoman Empire. But if many academics have studied this issue and offered an agreed vision of the disruptive effect that nationalism had in the heart of the Ottoman Empire, an evaluation of the impact and consequences that this process had in the population and the political configuration of the new states that appeared after the end of the Turkish domination has not been made. This...

Forced population movements in the Ottoman Empire and the Early Turkish Republic: An attempt at reassessment through demographic engineering
Şeker, Nesim (2013-07-01)
This article uses the concept of “demographic engineering” for the purpose of analyzing forced migration in the Ottoman Empire and early Turkish Republic. It defines demographic engineering in a wide sense, as ‘deliberate state intervention in population figures’ for political, ideological, strategic and economic reasons. It argues that reconsidering the issue of forced migration in the Ottoman Empire and the early Turkish Republic as a case of demographic engineering provides us with an analytical tool ena...
Travel, civilization and the east : Ottoman Travellers’ perception of “the east” in the late Ottoman Empire
Palabıyık, Mustafa Serdar; Yurdusev, Ahmet Nuri; Department of International Relations (2010)
This thesis analyzes the Ottoman travellers’ perception of “the East” in the late Ottoman Empire. In doing that, it links the Ottoman intellectual debates on the concept of civilization to their perceptions on the non-European lands and peoples. It mainly argues that the Ottoman intellectuals’ attempt to create a synthesis between the material elements of Western civilization and their own morality resulted in a perception of the East different from the Western perceptions. While the Western perceptions env...
