Bu yazıda, Arap ve Latin harflerine dayalı yazı sistemleri, yazıbirim-sesbirim etkileşiminin saydamlığını gösteren ve “yazı sisteminin derinliği” olarak adlandırılan etken bakımından karşılaştırılmaktadır. Türkçenin Latin alfabesine dayanan bugünkü yazı sistemi incelendiğinde, kimi parçalarüstü sesbirimlere, <ğ> harfine ve ödünçleme sözcüklere ilişkin kimi görünümler dışında, yazıbirimlerle sesbirimlerin neredeyse tümüyle örtüşür durumda olduğu görülmektedir. Buna karşın, Türkçenin Arap alfabesine dayanan yazı sisteminde, ünlüleri gösteren yazıbirimlerin eksikliği, aynı yazıbirimin birden çok sesbirimle ve tek bir sesbirimin birden çok yazıbirimle etkileşimi, saydamlığı etkileyen öğeler olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, 10525 sözlükbirimde harf-sesbirim eşleşmesinin tam ve kısmi olarak gerçekleştiği sözcükler belirlenerek Latin alfabesine dayalı bugünkü yazı sisteminde eşlemenin %95.33 oranında tam olarak gerçekleştiği, Arap alfabesine dayalı yazı sisteminde ise bu oranın %21.14 olduğu ortaya konmaktadır. Çalışmada ayrıca, Latin harfleriyle Türkçe yazımındaki durumun tersine, Türkçenin Arap harfleriyle yazımında, albiçimciklerdeki başkalaşımların sınırlı biçimde sergilenebildiği gösterilmektedir. Tüm bu bulguların, ilk okuma güçlüklerinin yazıbirim-sesbirim eşlemesiyle ilişkili olabileceği savına veri oluşturabileceği ileri sürülmektedir.
