Economic appraisal of the Bosphorus Tube Tunnel and Đstanbul Metro alternative and their environmental impacts

Karataş, Cevat
The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of the Bosphorus Tube Tunnel and a number of alternative İstanbul metro systems. An attempt is made to compare economically the Bosphorus Tube Tunnel with an Đstanbul Metro system via Taksim and combined alternative which comprises both the Bosphorus tube Tunnel and the Đstanbul metro system by refering to a future no-build baseline alternative. In the analysis, the Little-Mirrlees appraisal method is adopted that requires the estimation of national parameters and conversion factors for the primary inputs. Economic analysis is first based on market prices and then accounting prices. The economic appraisal system includes calculations of the internal rate of return, benefit-cost ratios and the discounted net present value (NPV) of each alternative. In the final section, the environmental impacts of each project are identified and taken into account in order to provide a more complete evaluation.

Performance based assessment of rammed aggregate piers
Çetin, Kemal Önder; Lale, Öner (null; 2015-09-17)
Within the confines of this paper, a normalized displacement-based capacity mobilization scheme is presented for rammed aggregate piers (RAP). For this purpose, field load tests, performed on 63 RAPs, in Turkey, were assessed. Site investigations at these sites revealed that generalized soil profiles are mostly composed of normally consolidated clay layers extending to a depth of 18 m. Below this depth, usually medium dense to dense sand / hard greywacke / very stiff to hard clay layers are present. A weigh...
Local institutional capacity and decentralization of power
Erkan, Gökhan Hüseyin; Şengül, Hüseyin Tarık; Department of Urban Policy Planning and Local Governments (2006)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the relationship between the success of the decentralization schemes and the local capacity by concentrating on the case of Metropolitan Municipality of Diyarbakır. The Local Government Reform in Turkey was built on the argument that local authorities, compared to the central government, are better in providing services in a more efficient and more participatory manner. This thesis argues that such an argument is valid only in an environment where there is a strong local...
Planar seismic source characterization models developed for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Istanbul
Gülerce, Zeynep; Guner, Baris; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin (Copernicus GmbH, 2017-12-22)
This contribution provides an updated planar seismic source characterization (SSC) model to be used in the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) for Istanbul. It defines planar rupture systems for the four main segments of the North Anatolian fault zone (NAFZ) that are critical for the PSHA of Istanbul: segments covering the rupture zones of the 1999 Kocaeli and Duzce earthquakes, central Marmara, and Ganos/Saros segments. In each rupture system, the source geometry is defined in terms of fault len...
Cost Efficiency Analyses of Optimally Sized Steel Frames for Economical Design of Medium-Rise Buildings
Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (2014-09-01)
The study, in this paper, investigates cost-efficient steel frameworks for economical design of medium-rise buildings. A total of 13 steel frames that incorporate various types of beam-column connection and bracing configuration are considered for detailed and comparative cost analyses. The numerical applications are performed using a 10-story building stiffened according to each of these steel frameworks to yield 13 test frames. First design optimizations are carried out in which the total member weight in...

This paper is devoted to the design and implementation of a multipurpose platform (MPP) for power system monitoring and analysis. This MPP is a novel device, which combines the abilities of a power quality (PQ) analyzer, an event logger, a synchronized phasor measurement unit, and an interarea oscillation identifier, all in one device. The multiple functions of the proposed MPP can serve the needs of the power system operators (SOs) as a wide-area monitoring system to observe the states and stability of the...
