Earth building materials have a long history in the world and especially in Turkey. Buildings dating from more 10 000 years have been uncovered by archaeologist and vernacular buildings all over the country are finished with mud plasters. The aim of this study is to propose solutions for vernacular and natural buildings that have a modern and aesthetic appearance and longevity more appropriate with actual standard of the building materials. The objective of this research is to identify appropriate additives that will reinforce the resistance of plaster to water and erosion as well as enhance its cohesion to the structure. Plaster mixes will be defined compared to a type of earth and a support material and their durability studied as well as their mechanical and hygrothermal properties.

Effects of masonry infill walls on the seismic performance of buildings
Öztürk, Mehmet Selim; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In Turkey, in most of the reinforced concrete buildings, hallow masonry infill walls are used as a non-structural element, during design stage, their contribution to overall building behavior is not well known. Observations made after the earthquakes revealed that these non-structural elements had beneficial effects on the lateral capacity of the building. In this study, the contribution of the hallow masonry infill walls to the lateral behavior of reinforced concrete buildings was investigated. For this pu...
Influence of Clay Tile Brick Infill Walls on Seismic Response of Buildings
Yakut, Ahmet (2013-07-17)
Majority of buildings in Turkey and in most developing countries are made with reinforced concrete frames infilled with clay tile brick walls. Despite this, influence of these walls is not accounted for in design. Past earthquake observations have shown that the infill walls have great influence on performance of buildings. In this paper, influence of the brick infill walls on strength and stiffness of RC buildings are presented through analytical results obtained for some typical buildings. Comparison of r...
Materials analyses guiding for repairs in conservation: An Historical Bath Structure “Yeni Hamam” in Sivrihisar, Turkey
Madani, Nigar; Çetin, Özlem; Erol, Fatıma; Tavukçuoğlu, Ayşe; Mısır, Çağkan Tunç; Güney, Bilge Alp; Caner Saltk, Emine Nevin (null; 2017-05-29)
The Ottoman baths which have survived for hundreds of years are the historical structures still keeping their authentic architectural and technological properties. The study deals with the discovery of the knowledge on materials technology that contributes to the long-term durability of those structures. The authentic materials of an 18 th century Ottoman bath structure, Yeni Hamam (Sivrihisar, Turkey) were examined in this regard, in order to define the specifications for compatible repair materials which ...
Evaluation of seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses
Aktaş, Yasemin Didem; Şahin Güçhan, Neriman; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Architecture (2011)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame “hımış” structures, which form the major part of Turkey’s cultural heritage, from an engineering point of view. On the other hand, the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame structures was not evaluated from an engineering perspective. For the aim of seismic resistance evaluation of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses, the TUBITAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) p...
An Informed process for new building design in historic settlement: the case of İbrahimpaşa Village, Cappadocia-Turkey
Binoğul, Beril; Özgönül, Nimet; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2019)
Historical settlements are heritage sites which are formed in time, in accordance with the landform, climate, local materials and traditional living styles which all together specify the original characteristics of that area. They should be able to change and develop according to the needs, while they also maintain the continuity of their original characteristics. In this concept, new buildings in historical settlements is a conservation problem and solutions should be provided to maintain the values of the...
