Post-occupancy evaluation of straw-bale buildings in Turkey

2017-12-31
The aim of the research is to identify the advantages and disadvantages of straw-bale buildings in terms of users comfort and to understand the reason of the attraction of this material in Turkey. This aim will be fulfilled through three objectives which are:• The evaluation the satisfaction of straw-bale buildings inhabitants in Turkey • The evaluation of the comfort of the straw-bale buildings in different climatic regions• The comparison of this material with other conventional and alternative techniques. The current project is expecting to both determine the user’s satisfaction of straw-bale building in Turkey and the real behavior of this buildings through long term monitoring and has been started previously. . Literature survey on straw-bale construction and especially its thermal behavior and comfort have been made in previous research project and publications. The identification of most of the straw-bale buildings in Turkey has already been done and is available on Internet and some of the possible houses for monitoring have been determined.

The effects of Turkish disaster regulations on architectural design
Özyıldıran, Güler; İmamoğlu, Vacit; Department of Architecture (2007)
The aim of this study is to examine the role of ‘Turkish Disaster Regulations’ on architectural design. Although the preliminary aim of Turkish disaster regulations is to provide knowledge for designers and builders to control structural and constructional system of buildings that can resist disasters in the pre-disaster period, these regulations can create some restrictions for architects in their design process. Following an analytical examinations of Turkish disaster regulations that have been developed ...

Evaluation of seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses
Aktaş, Yasemin Didem; Şahin Güçhan, Neriman; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Architecture (2011)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame “hımış” structures, which form the major part of Turkey’s cultural heritage, from an engineering point of view. On the other hand, the seismic resistance of traditional Ottoman timber frame structures was not evaluated from an engineering perspective. For the aim of seismic resistance evaluation of traditional Ottoman timber frame houses, the TUBITAK (the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) p...
Observations on earthquake resistance of traditional timber-framed houses in Turkey
Şahin Güçhan, Neriman (Elsevier BV, 2007-02-01)
The aim of this study is to establish the earthquake behaviour of traditional timber-framed houses in Turkey and their technical features to serve as a guide in their conservation. This paper first discusses the destructive effects of changing settlement patterns on the traditional building stock and explores earthquake damage on traditional Turkish buildings, analysing the 1894-İstanbul, 1970-Gediz and finally 1999-Kocaeli earthquakes. A short definition is then provided of timber-framed building methods i...
A comparative structural and architectural analysis of earthquake resistant design principles applied in reinforced concrete residential buildings in Turkey
Özmen, Cengiz; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2008)
The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that it is possible to design earthquake resistant residential structures without significant compromises in the spatial quality and economic viability of the building. The specific type of structural system that this thesis focuses on is the reinforced concrete skeleton system. The parametric examples and key studies that are used in this research are chosen among applied projects in the city of Bolu. This city is chosen due to its location on the North Anatolian Fa...
