Investigation of combustion process through horizontal wells

Bağcı, Ali Suat
Dry combustion was accomplished with the application of different horizontal well configurations in a 3-D model using high gravity oil. Seven experiments using Raman crude oil (18 degrees API) were carried out in the laboratory with a 40 cm square 3-D model having a thickness of 15 cm. Five different well configurations were applied to recover Raman crude oil. The model was packed by tamping a mixture of crushed limestone, water and crude oil. A total of 36 thermocouples were used at the top, center and bottom planes to measure 3-D temperature distribution and to track the combustion front during the experiments. An ignitor was placed near the vertical injector Air was injected through this vertical injector in each experiment following a period of pre-heating. To determine their effects on oil recovery and process variables, all of the well configurations were studied. The highest oil recoveries were obtained with horizontal producers positioned at the boundary of the model alone as a single producer. With the same burned volume, more oil was recovered by horizontal producers than by vertical producers. The process variables such as front velocity, fuel consumption rate, injection and production pressures and sweep efficiencies were investigated for Raman crude oil to assess process performance.

The effect of fractures on the steam-assisted gravity drainage process
Bağcı, Ali Suat (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2004-11-01)
This study presents an experimental investigation of the effect of fractures and well configurations on the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process in a three-dimensional model, using 12.4degreesAPI gravity crude oil. A total of eight runs were conducted, using a 30 cm x 30 cm x 10 cm rectangular-shaped box model. Temperature distributions were observed using 25 thermocouples. Three different well configurations were investigated-a horizontal injection and production well pair, a vertical injection-v...
Determination of Rheological Models for Drilling Fluids (A Statistical Approach)
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Informa UK Limited, 2004-01-16)
A rheological model conventionally characterizes non-Newtonian drilling fluids. Parameters of the rheological models are estimated by explicitly solving the required number of equations simultaneously. Rheological models are stochastic and this study considers only the deterministic part of the model. Observed data is accepted as arising from randomness due to the system. A nonlinear least squares method is applied to readings of 6 standard Fann viscometer speeds in order to estimate the models' parameters....
Analytical investigation of wet combustion process for heavy oil recovery
Bağcı, Ali Suat (Informa UK Limited, 2004-12-01)
Analysis of combustion tube data produced from experiments performed under realistic reservoir conditions is currently the most valid method of investigating in-situ combustion process. In this study, the optimization of water-air ratio for B. Kozluca heavy crude oil, and the comparison of the performance of dry and wet forward combustion processes were studied. An analytical model was used to extend the laboratory results so that the oil production and steam zone volume can be estimated under field conditi...
HORIZONTAL PRODUCER WELLS IN INSITU COMBUSTION (ISC) PROCESSES
GREAVES, M; TUWIL, AA; BAGCI, AS (Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), 1993-04-01)
A simple 3-D physical model has been developed to investigate the use of horizontal producer wells in in situ combustion processes. The semi-scaled 3-D model was a rectangular box with 40 cm by 40 cm by 10 cm dimensions. Dry in situ combustion experiments were conducted with three different well configurations: (1) a vertical injector and horizontal producer, (2) a vertical injector and two horizontal producers, and (3) injector and producer, both vertical. A matrix of 60 thermocouples was used to obtain te...
Performance prediction of in situ combustion processes
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Informa UK Limited, 2001-01-01)
In this research, in situ combustion performance calculations were performed using different algorithms, which were based on oil recovery/volume burned correlative methods. The correlations were based on field and laboratory combustion tube results. A computer method was developed and applied to different heavy crude oil fields. The results showed that an in situ combustion process is applicable in these fields if the volume burned is 30% for field 1 and 40% for field 2.
