In this work, performance analyses of slip energy recovery drives during and at recovery after instantaneous power-supply failure in one or more supply phases have been carried out. Transient slip energy recovery drive currents and voltages under such fault conditions have been obtained theoretically using mathematical models which take into account the three-phase, single-phase, and disconnected power-supply conditions. A detailed set of theoretical and experimental results is given to clarify the expected behavior of the drive under instantaneous power-supply failure of a few cycles duration and at recovery. Insertion of an external bypass resistor into the dc link by the use of a static switch has been discussed to suppress the induced overvoltages and, hence, overcurrents in the rotor windings and converters, after recovery of the supply.

Effects of parallel programming design patterns on the performance of multi-core processor based real time embedded systems
Kekeç, Burak; Bilgen, Semih; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
Increasing usage of multi-core processors has led to their use in real time embedded systems (RTES). This entails high performance requirements which may not be easily met when software development follows traditional techniques long used for single processor systems. In this study, parallel programming design patterns especially developed and reported in the literature will be used to improve RTES implementations on multi-core systems. Specific performance parameters will be selected for assessment, and pe...
Performance optimization of induction motors during voltage-controlled soft starting
Zenginobuz, G; Cadirci, I; Ermiş, Muammer; Barlak, C (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2004-06-01)
This paper deals with the performance optimization of medium/high-power induction motors during soft starting by eliminating the supply frequency torque pulsations, and by keeping the line current constant at the preset value. Starting torque pulsations are eliminated by triggering back-to-back-connected thyristors at proper points on the first supply voltage cycle. Line current during starting can be kept constant at any preset value by a simple strategy composed of successive cosinusoidal and constant fun...
Improving the Thermal Performance of Rotary and Linear Air-Cored Permanent Magnet Machines for Direct Drive Wind and Wave Energy Applications
Mueller, Markus A; Burchell, Joseph; Chong, Yew Chuan; Keysan, Ozan; McDonald, Alasdair; Galbraith, Mike; Subiabre, Estanislao J. P. Echenique (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2019-06-01)
Air-cored machines offer benefits in terms the elimination of magnetic attraction forces between stator and rotor. With no iron in the stator there is not a good thermal conduction path for heat generated by Joule losses in the stator winding. Results from both models and experimental tests are provided in this paper to investigate different methods of cooling air-cored windings, including natural air-cooling, direct liquid cooling, and the use of heat pipes.
Effect of thermal neutron irradiation in boron-doped melt-textured YBCO superconductors
Topal, U; Dorosinskii, L; Ozkan, H; Yavuz, H (Elsevier BV, 2003-05-01)
Y1.6Ba2.3Cu3.3Ox superconductors with different amounts of boron doping have been synthesized using the MPMG technique. Undoped and boron-doped samples were irradiated with thermal neutrons to study the effect of defects produced by the fission reaction, B(n,alpha)Li, on the pinning and the critical current. We observed that the pinning and the critical current density were improved as a result of thermal neutron irradiation. This improvement was slightly stronger for the boron-doped samples compared to the...
Finding optimal schedules in a home energy management system
Merdanoglu, Hakan; Yakici, Ertan; Dogan, O. Tufan; Duran, Serhan; Karatas, Mumtaz (Elsevier BV, 2020-05-01)
In this study, we model and solve the scheduling problem embedded in a home energy management system (HEMS), which enables users to overcome the major obstacles in implementing demand response programs. The problem aims to find the minimum energy cost while taking into account the time-varying prices, generation from renewable sources, usage demands for each appliance in household, battery storage capacity and grid constraints. Due to the uncertainties in supply, demand and electricity price, a stochastic o...
