Pyrolysis kinetics of almond and hazelnut shells and beech wood were carried out using a thermogravimetric technique. Experiments were repeated for different final pyrolysis temperatures ranging from 300 to 850-degrees-C. Approximately 90% of the pyrolysis reactions were completed up to 450-degrees-C. The initial values of the activation energy of pyrolysis reaction were found to be around 22 kcal/mol for shells of almond and hazelnut. On the other hand, initial activation energy of beech wood pyrolysis was found as 29.4 kcal/mol. Results indicated that a first-order decomposition in terms of volatile content of the reactant showed good agreement with the data only at the initial stages of the reaction. The reaction rate constant was found to decrease with reaction extent due to the changes in the chemical and physical structure of the solid. Among several models proposed, a model which predicted an increase of activation energy with reaction extent gave the best agreement with the experimental data.

Ternary-mixture grinding of ceramic raw materials
Ipek, H; Ucbas, Y; Hoşten, Çetin (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-01)
Batch experiments were carried out on the dry ball milling of commonly used ceramic raw materials quartz, kaolin and feldspar, singly and as ternary mixtures. The modified form of the Charles energy-size reduction equation was used to calculate the energy consumed by each of the components in the mixture. The results confirmed the validity of the mass fraction hypothesis for energy split between the components that had been defined and verified for the binary mixtures of equal-density minerals. The distribu...
Photocatalytic antibacterial activity of TiO2-SiO2 thin films: The effect of composition on cell adhesion and antibacterial activity
ERDURAL, Beril; Bolukbasi, UFUK; Karakaş, Gürkan (Elsevier BV, 2014-06-01)
Colloidal solutions of SiO2-TiO2 mixed oxides having different SiO2 contents were synthesized by sol-gel technique and thin films were deposited over glass slides by using dip coating technique. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM and methylene blue adsorption methods. The surface free energy of thin films was measured by sessile drop method by using diiodomethane, glycerol and water as probe liquids. The photocatalytic antibacterial activity of the samples was determined for Escherichia coli XL...
POLYESTER FILM STRIPS COATED WITH PHOTOGRAPHIC GELATIN CONTAINING IMMOBILIZED INVERTASE
Akbulut, Ural; PEKYARDIMCI, S (Informa UK Limited, 1991-01-01)
Invertase was immobilized into photographic gelatin by chemical crosslinking with formaldehyde and chromium (III) acetate. Polyester film strips were coated with invertase-gelatin mixture which increased durability during consecutive immersions into reaction media. The effect of gelatin, crosslinker and enzyme concentrations on activity were studied. Enzyme leakages from immobilized invertase film strips were controlled by washing with EDTA solutions. The activities of washing solutions were measured sp...
Inactivation of peroxidase and lipoxygenase in carrots, green beans, and green peas by combination of high hydrostatic pressure and mild heat treatment
AKYOL, Cagdas; Alpas, Hami; Bayındırlı, Alev (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2006-12-01)
The efficiency of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) with the combination of mild heat treatment on peroxidase (POD) and lipoxygenase (LOX) inactivation in carrots, green beans, and green peas was investigated. In the first part of the study, the samples were pressurized under 250-450 MPa at 20-50 degrees C for 15-60 min. In the second part, two steps treatments were performed as water blanching at 40-70 degrees C for 15 and 30 min after pressurization at 250 MPa and 20 degrees C for 15-60 min. Carrot POD was ...
Polystyrene-organoclay nanocomposites prepared by melt intercalation, in situ, and Masterbatch methods
Yılmazer, Ülkü; Ozden, G (Wiley, 2006-06-01)
In this study, polystyrene (PS)/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation, in situ polymerization, and masterbatch methods. In the masterbatch method, as the first step, a high clay content composite of PS-organoclay (masterbatch) was prepared by in situ polymerization, and then the prepared masterbatch was diluted to desired compositions with commercial PS in a twin-screw extruder. The structure and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were examined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) ...
