In this study, a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) of 125 mm diameter and 1800 trim height was used to find the combustion characteristics of sewage sludge (SS) produced in Turkey. Sludge + olive cake, and Sludge + lignite coal mixtures were burned separately. Various sludge-to-lignite coal and sludge-to-olive cake ratios (5/95, 10/90. 15/85, 20/80) were tried. On-line concentrations of major components (O-2, SO2, CO2, CO, NOx, CmHn) were measured in the flue gas, as well as temperature and pressure distributions along the bed. Combustion efficiencies of sludge + olive cake and sludge + lignite coal mixtures were calculated, and the optimum conditions for operating parameters were discussed. The results have shown that the combustion mainly takes place in the upper regions of the main column where the temperature reaches 900 C. SS + Coal burn in the CFB with an efficiency of 95.14% to 96.18%, which is considered to be quite good. When burning sludge mixed with olive cake, appreciable amounts of CO and unburned hydrocarbons are formed and the combustion efficiency drops to 92.93%. CO and CmHn emissions are lower when lignite coal is mixed with various amounts of SS than the. emissions when the coal is burned alone. As the %SS is increased in the fuel mixture, the SO2 emission decreases. NOx emissions are slightly higher. When burning sludge mixed with olive cake, SO2 and NOx emissions are slightly higher. CO and CmHn emissions decrease sharply when SS is mixed with 5%wt. olive cake. With increasing sludge ratio these emissions increase due to the unburned hydrocarbons. As a result of this study, it is believed that SS can be burned effectively in a CFBC together with other fuels, especially with olive cake (OC). OC will be a good additive fuel for the combustion of lower quality fuels.

Levels and sources of polychlorinated biphenyls in Ankara creek sediments, Turkey
Ozyurek, Nazan Akduman; Gedik, Kadir; Sıltu, Esra; İmamoğlu, İpek (Informa UK Limited, 2013-06-01)
The spatial distribution, degree of pollution and major sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were evaluated in surficial sediments of Ankara Creek, located in the capital of Turkey and serving as one of the tributaries in the third largest watershed in Turkey. Sediment sigma PCB concentrations analyzed on Aroclor and congener basis (seven indicator congeners) range from 5.5 to 777.6ng g1 and 3.7 to 743.3ng g1 dw as Aroclor and congener based concentrations, respectively. High concentrations of sigma ...
Hydrogeological and hydrochemical investigation for below-sea-level quarrying at cement raw material site (Kocaeli-Darica, Turkey)
Doyuran, Vedat; Karahanoğlu, Nurkan; Çamur, Mehmet Zeki; Topal, Tamer; Süzen, Mehmet Lütfi; Yesilnacar, Ertan (Informa UK Limited, 2003-01-01)
A research has been carried Out to investigate the effects of below sea level mining on the cement raw material quality of a limestone quarry located adjacent to the shoreline near Darica-Kocaeli-Turkey. Field studies involved rock mass characterization through discontinuity surveys performed at the working benches of the quarry as well as on the core samples, monitoring of groundwater levels, performance of water pressure tests, and in-situ hydrochemical measurements. Hydrogeological data suggest that the ...
Co-combustion of coal and olive cake in a fluidized bed with limestone addition and freeboard extension
Akpulat, Onur; Atımtay, Aysel; Department of Environmental Engineering (2009)
In this study, flue gas emissions and combustion efficiencies during combustion and co-combustion of olive cake and coal are investigated in a bubbling fluidized bed with an inside diameter of 102 mm and a height of 900 mm and 1900 mm. Tunçbilek lignite coal and Edremit olive cake were used in the experiments as fuels. Temperature distributions along the combustion column were continuously measured. Flue gas concentrations of O2, CO, SO2 and NOx were measured during combustion experiments. Four sets of expe...
Enrichment of metals in the surface sediments of Sapanca Lake
Bakan, G; Balkas, TI (Wiley, 1999-01-01)
A comprehensive lake sediment study was performed on the Sapanca Lake of Turkey in which certain metal analyses were conducted using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The purpose of the study was to find the enrichment of metals in the surface sediments of Sapanca Lake. A method, namely, the index of geoaccumulation, was used to define the degree of anthropogenic pollution in the Sapanca Lake basin. Results of the geoaccumulation index indicate that only enrichments of trace metals, c...
Emission characteristics of co-combustion of a low calorie and high-sulfur-lignite coal and woodchips in a circulating fluidized bed combustor: Part 2. Effect of secondary air and its location
VAROL, MURAT; Atımtay, Aysel; OLGUN, HAYATİ (2014-08-15)
In this study, co-combustion of woodchips and Bursa-Orhaneli lignite was carried out in a circulating fluidized bed combustor, 6 m long and 108 mm inside diameter. Co-combustion of lignite and woodchips was performed in order to investigate the effect of secondary air ratio (SAR) on the flue gas emissions. The woodchips content of the fuel mixture was 30% and 50% by wt. Secondary air (SA) was supplied to the combustor from five different locations along the combustor and at several SARs. During the combusti...
