A finite element formulation and analytical and semianalytical methods for calculating sensitivity derivatives for static analysis and design problems of Mindlin plate structures are presented. The finite element is the hybrid-stress version of the displacement model element MIN3 by Tessler and Hughes [1]. It is triangular and has a simple nodal configuration with three corner nodes and C-0 type nodal variables. The use of independent field assumptions for displacements and stresses removes the necessity for the inplane shear correction factor of MIN3. With its three-noded configuration, the element can effectively be used as the bending part of facet shell elements, and due to its simplicity and accuracy, it can be employed in large scale analysis and design problems of folded plate and shell structures. The sensitivity derivatives that are needed in the design processes are obtained by analytical and semi-analytical methods for the thickness and shape design variables, respectively. The well-known deficiency of the classical semi-analytical method in the shape design of flexural systems is alleviated by using a series approximation for the sensitivity derivatives and considering the higher order terms. The accuracy of the proposed formulations in computing displacements, stresses and sensitivity derivatives is verified by numerical examples.

Transformation Electromagnetics Based Analysis of Waveguides With Random Rough or Periodic Grooved Surfaces
Ozgun, Ozlem; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2013-02-01)
A computational model is introduced which employs transformation-based media to increase the computational performance of finite methods (such as finite element or finite difference methods) for analyzing waveguides with grooves or rough surfaces. Random behavior of the roughness is taken into account by utilizing the Monte Carlo technique, which is based on a set of random rough surfaces generated from Gaussian distribution. The main objective of the proposed approach is to create a single mesh, and to ana...
Performance Evaluation of the Numerical Flux Jacobians in Flow Solution and Aerodynamic Design Optimization
Ezertas, Alper; Eyi, Sinan (2010-07-16)
A direct sparse matrix solver is utilized for the flow solution and the analytical sensitivity analysis. The effects of the accuracy of the numerical Jacobians on the accuracy of sensitivity analysis and on the performance of the Newton's method flow solver are analyzed in detail. The gradient based aerodynamic design optimization is employed to demonstrate those effects.
Linear and nonlinear progressive failure analysis of laminated composite aerospace structures
Günel, Murat; Kayran, Altan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2012)
This thesis presents a finite element method based comparative study of linear and geometrically non-linear progressive failure analysis of thin walled composite aerospace structures, which are typically subjected to combined in-plane and out-of-plane loadings. Different ply and constituent based failure criteria and material property degradation schemes have been included in a PCL code to be executed in MSC Nastran. As case studies, progressive failure analyses of sample composite laminates with cut-outs u...
Sensitivity analysis using finite difference and analytical Jacobians
Ezertaş, Ahmet Alper; Eyi, Sinan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2009)
The Flux Jacobian matrices, the elements of which are the derivatives of the flux vectors with respect to the flow variables, are needed to be evaluated in implicit flow solutions and in analytical sensitivity analyzing methods. The main motivation behind this thesis study is to explore the accuracy of the numerically evaluated flux Jacobian matrices and the effects of the errors in those matrices on the convergence of the flow solver, on the accuracy of the sensitivities and on the performance of the desig...
STATISTICAL PARAMETERS CHARACTERIZING THE SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF SELECTED SOIL HYDRAULIC-PROPERTIES
Ünlü, Kahraman; BIGGAR, JW; MORKOC, F (Wiley, 1990-11-01)
The knowledge of the statistical parameters of the variance, sigma-2, and the correlation scale, lambda, characterizing the spatial structures of the log of the saturated hydraulic conductivity, lnK(s), pore size distribution parameter alpha, and the specific water capacity, C, is required in stochastic modeling in order to understand the overall response of large-scale heterogenous unsaturated flow systems. These parameters are estimated assuming second-order stationarity and an exponential semivariogram ...
