A series of copolyesters based on p-acetoxybenzoic acid (p-ABA), m-acetoxybenzoic acid (m-ABA), and p-acetoxyphenylacetic acid (p-APAA) were prepared by a modified melt polycondensation reaction. The effect of linear p-ABA structure, kink m-ABA and flexible p-APAA moiety on the properties of copolyesters were systematically investigated. The copolyesters were characterized by DSC, thermogravimetric analysis, 1 H-NMR, polarized optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. The copolyesters exhibited nematic liquid-crystalline phases in a broad temperature range of about 110 degrees C, when the content of linear p-ABA units was over 55 mol%. DSC analysis of the anisotropic copolyesters revealed broad and weak endotherms associated with the nematic phases, and the melting temperatures were found to be in the processable region. The degree of crystallinity, thermal decomposition temperatures, crystal-to-nematic and nematic-to-isotropic transitions depend on the type of monomer units, and these transitions increased as the content of the rigid-linear p-ABA units increased, or as the content of the flexible/kink p-APAA/m-ABA units decreased.

Synthesis and Characterization of 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate (HEMA) and Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Copolymer Used as Biomaterial
Vargun, Elif; SANKIR, MEHMET; Aran, Bengi; DEMİRCİ SANKIR, NURDAN; Usanmaz, Ali (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
A series of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PMMA-co-PHEMA), copolymers were synthesized by an emulsion polymerization technique. Copolymer compositions were determined by FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. It was found that comonomer ratios used in the recipes were comparable within the actual copolymers. Glass transition temperatures (Tg) of PMMA-co-PHEMA copolymers were varied from 119 degrees C to 100 degrees C by increasing HEMA content. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the cop...

2-[(3-Thienylcarbonyl)oxy]ethyl 3-thiophene carboxylate (TOET) was synthesized via the reaction of 3-thionylcarboxylic acid with ethylene glycol, and electrochemically polymerized with thiophene (Th) and pyrrole (Py) by using tetrabutylannnonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB) as the supporting electrolyte in acetonitrile (ACN). Characterization of the resulting copolymers were performed via cyclic voltammetry, FTIR, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical conductivities are measured by the four-probe ...

Oligo-2-aminophenol (OAF) was synthesized with oxidative polycondensation of 2-aminophenol and hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous alkaline medium at 80 degrees C. Oligo-2-aminophenol with thiophene side groups (TOAF) was obtained by the reaction of OAF and thiophene-3-acetic acid. Graft copolymers of TOAF and pyrrole were synthesized by electrochemical polymerization in p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA)/water medium. Characterization of the graft copolymer (TOAF-g-Py), was carried out by combination of techniques...
