Calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) whiskers and crystals were produced by the route of molten salt synthesis. The effects on whisker morphology of chosen flux, flux-to-HA ratio, synthesis temperature, and reaction time were investigated. The thermal stabilities of the produced whiskers were tested at 1300 degreesC in an air atmosphere. A tentative X-ray diffraction pattern was proposed for the HA whiskers, Molten salt synthesis with a K2SO4 flux was found to be a simple and sturdy technique for manufacturing short (less than or equal to 60 mum) HA whiskers in the temperature range from 1080 degrees to similar to 1200 degreesC. The alternative use of fluxes such as KCI, KBr, CaCl2, or Na2SO4, rather than K2SO4, over the temperature range 850 degrees -1000 degreesC resulted in the formation of large (similar to 25 mum) single crystals of HA.

X-ray diffraction data for flux-grown calcium hydroxyapatite whiskers
Tas, AC (2001-06-01)
Calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca-l10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2)) whiskers were prepared by using the technique of molten salt synthesis with the fluxing agent of potassium sulphate (K2SO4). A tentative x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern was suggested for the produced whiskers. Phase purity, composition, and morphology of the whiskers were investigated by powder XRD, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Synergistic fire retardancy of colemanite, a natural hydrated calcium borate, in high-impact polystyrene containing brominated epoxy and antimony oxide
Kaynak, Cevdet (2011-05-01)
This study explores for the first time the synergistic fire retardant action of natural hydrated calcium borate, namely the mineral colemanite, which partially replaces antimony oxide in brominated flame retardant high-impact polystyrene compounds. Various antimony oxide to hydrated calcium borate ratios were employed keeping the brominated flame retardant additive at a constant loading level. With partial colemanite substitution for antimony oxide, lower heat release rate, total heat evolved and fire growt...
BIOACTIVITY OF APATITE-WOLLASTONITE GLASS-CERAMICS PRODUCED BY MELTING CASTING
PARK, JONGEE; Öztürk, Abdullah (World Scientific Pub Co Pte Lt, 2013-02-01)
Glass-ceramics containing only apatite and wollastonite crystals were produced in the system MgO-CaO-SiO2-P2O5-F by the melt casting process. The bioactivity of the glass-ceramics was determined by immersing the glass-ceramics in a simulated body fluid (SBF) and by assessing the resulting apatite formation on the free surface after various immersion durations. A 12-mu m-thick apatite layer formed on the surface of the glass-ceramic containing only apatite crystals after 20 days immersion in SBF. However, th...
Synthesis of calcium carbonate particles for biomedical applications
Oral, Çağatay Mert; Ercan, Batur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2020)
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles have been widely used in biomedical applications owing to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. In order to effectively utilize CaCO3 particles in biomedical applications, their physical and chemical properties should be systematically controlled. However, this is a challenging task due to the presence of three different anhydrous CaCO3 polymorphs having complex crystallization behavior. In this thesis, CaCO3 particles were synthesized at distinct environments to c...
MELT BLENDING OF ULTRA-HIGH-MOLECULAR-WEIGHT AND HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE - THE EFFECT OF MIXING RATE ON THERMAL, MECHANICAL, AND MORPHOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
TINCER, T; COSKUN, M (1993-10-01)
The blends of two different ultra high molecular weight polyethylenes (UHMWPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) were prepared in melt at different compositions and mixing rates in Brabender Torque Rheometer. The temperature build-up due to the internal friction during melt blending was recorded and evaluated with respect to the change in the torque. The temperature at maximum torque was considered the fusion point temperature of the UHMWPE in the blend. This fusion point temperature was found to depend ...
