The present study investigated the relationship between helpless explanatory style and the number of physical illness symptoms experienced by Turkish college students. The sample of the study included 297 (120 females, 177 males) subjects. The subjects were presented with the Depressive Attribution Style Questionnaire(DASQ) and the Physical Symptom Checklist. A 2x2 (high-low occurrence of symptoms X sex) analysis of variance yielded no significant main or interaction effects. However, a significant correlation was found between the subjects' helpless explanatory style and the occurrence of physical illness symptoms. This result supported the previous research indicating that helpless explanatory style was related to current illness.
