IS HELPLESS EXPLANATORY STYLE RELATED TO ILLNESS

AYDIN, G
The present study investigated the relationship between helpless explanatory style and the number of physical illness symptoms experienced by Turkish college students. The sample of the study included 297 (120 females, 177 males) subjects. The subjects were presented with the Depressive Attribution Style Questionnaire(DASQ) and the Physical Symptom Checklist. A 2x2 (high-low occurrence of symptoms X sex) analysis of variance yielded no significant main or interaction effects. However, a significant correlation was found between the subjects' helpless explanatory style and the occurrence of physical illness symptoms. This result supported the previous research indicating that helpless explanatory style was related to current illness.

Careful analysis of transcripts of interviews we conducted with a sample of persons identified as suffering epilepsy or seizure disorders in an epidemiological study in Turkey revealed not only that life stories of illness have an overall narrative structure but that the interviews were composed as a corpus of shorter stories. Analytic concepts from reader response theory bring attention to aspects of both the overall life story and the stories told about illness. In particular, we identify 'subjunctivizing...
