Deformed sedimentary sequences of Late Cretaceous-middle Eocene age located between the Sakarya continent and the Anatolian Complex have been interpreted as the fill of a forearc basin. The history and structure of this basin are critical for understanding the evolution of the Neo-Tethyan subduction in the Middle East. I test and elaborate upon this interpretation on the basis of three basic outcrop areas of Upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary sedimentary sequences confined to a northeast-southwest-trending belt in northwest Ankara. These are the Alci, Kinik, and Orhaniye areas. They expose two different sedimentary sequences called Alci and Orhaniye. In the Alci area, the sequence starts at the base with the continental red clastic rocks on the erosional surface of an underlying ophiolitic melange and continues upward into the shallow-marine reefal buildup of the late Maastrichtian age. The upper half of the Alci sequence is separated from its lower half by a local disconformity and dominated by the continental debris-flow deposits composed mostly of volcanic material. By contrast, both the Kinik and Orhaniye areas are characterized by a thick, continuous and coarsening-upward sequence overlying conformably the underlying ophiolitic melange. The lower half of the Orhaniye sequence is dominated by a deep-marine flysch, its middle part by continental clastic material, and the topmost part by the shallow-marine reefal buildup.

Biostratigraphy of Lower Permian foraminiferal assemblages from platform-slope carbonate blocks within the Mersin Melange, southern Turkey: Paleogeographical implications
Okuyucu, Cengiz; TEKİN, UĞUR KAĞAN; Bedi, Yavuz; Sayıt, Kaan (2020-04-01)
The Mersin Melange (MM) as a part of the Mersin Ophiolitic Complex in southern Turkey is a sedimentary complex including blocks and tectonic slices within a Late Cretaceous matrix. Two blocks (Keven and Cingeypinari) within the MM originated from the northern branch of Neotethys (Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Ocean) and have been studied in detail using foraminiferal assemblages to correlate them with coeval successions in the Taurides and to approach the Early Permian evolution of the northern branch of the Neotet...
Implications of Jurassic chert identified in the Tokat Complex, northern Turkey
Bozkurt, Erdin; Kocyigit, A (1997-01-01)
The Tokat Complex is a strongly deformed tectono-sedimentary mixture of low-grade metamorphic rocks with abundant recrystallized limestone and relatively rare serpentinite and radiolarian chert in blocks of variable size. Samples from the radiolarian chert blocks, found in highly crushed zones, each of which corresponds to a thrust sheet within an imbricate thrust zone, have yielded a Tithonian fossil assemblage. They are interpreted as tectonic inclusions emplaced within the Tokat Complex after its main po...
Integrated Radiolaria, benthic foraminifera and conodont biochronology of the pelagic Permian blocks/tectonic slices and geochemistry of associated volcanic rocks from the Mersin Melange, southern Turkey: Implications for the Permian evolution of the northern Neotethys
TEKİN, UĞUR KAĞAN; OKUYUCU, CENGİZ; Sayıt, Kaan; Bedi, Yavuz; Noble, Paula J.; Krystyn, Leopold; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2019-03-01)
Blocks and tectonic slices within the Mersin Melange (southern Turkey), which are of Northern Neotethyan origin (Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Ocean (IAE)), were studied in detail by using radiolarian, conodont, and foraminiferal assemblages on six different stratigraphic sections with well-preserved Permian succesions. The basal part of the Permian sequence, composed of alternating chert and mudstone with basic volcanics, is assigned to the late Asselian (Early Permian) based on radiolarians. The next basaltic int...
New Araucarian Conifer from the Late Cretaceous (Campanian-Maastrichtian) of Southeastern Turkey
Kvacek, Jiri; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Hosgor, Izzet; Mendes, Mario Miguel (University of Chicago Press, 2019-07-01)
A new fossil conifer Araucaria rothwellii J.Kvaek from the Campanian-Maastrichtian marine sediments of the Bozova Formation in southeastern Turkey is described based on leaf compressions and leaf impressions. The new species is characterized by twigs possessing helically arranged broadly lanceolate leaves with attenuate apexes and slightly narrowed bases. Amphistomatic leaves bear stomata arranged in rows surrounded by four to six subsidiary cells; the rows are longitudinal to the leaf margin. Ordinary epid...
Comparative molecular phylogenetics of Astragalus L. sections from Turkey with New World Astragalus species using nrDNA ITS sequences
Dizkirici, Ayten; EKİCİ, MURAT; Kaya, Zeki (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-01-01)
Comparative molecular phylogenetic study using nrDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) sequences was carried out on species from three Astragalus L. (Fabaceae) sections from Turkey (Old World species) and the New World. A total of 56 taxa (179 accessions) including 30 species from Incani DC., 15 species from Hypoglottidei DC. and 11 species from Dissitiflori DC. section were used in the current study. The total length of the ITS region was 642 bp with 56 (8.7 %) parsimony-informative and 9 insertion\...
