This paper investigates the impact of non-Darcy flow, represented by rate-dependent skin factor (DQ(SC)), on pressure profiles, flow regimes, and productivity indices of horizontal wells extending in conventional and unconventional gas reservoirs. It introduces a new simplified technique for characterising reservoir performance under different non-Darcy flow impacts. The outcomes of this study are summarised as: 1) understanding the conditions at which non-Darcy flow could have considerable effects on reservoir performance; 2) estimating the deviation in productivity index caused by non-Darcy flow. The most interesting points in this study are: 1) the ability to estimate rate-dependent skin factor from well test analysis by observing early time radial flow regime; 2) all flow regimes, unlike pressure behaviors and productivity index, are not affected by non-Darcy flow; 3) productivity index declines sharply for high rate-dependent skin factor at early production time while pseudo-steady state productivity index is not affected by non-Darcy flow. Implementation of horizontal well CBM/ECBM technology and the assessment of effective CO2 storage capacity in a Scottish coalfield
Sınayuç, Çağlar; Imrie, Claire E.; Syed, S. Amer; Korre, Anna; Durucan, Sevket (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-01)
In this study the theoretical and effective methane recovery and CO2 storage potential of four coal seams within a well characterised section of a CBM license in Scotland are estimated, considering different horizontal well patterns, the effect of permeability heterogeneity and the composition of the injected fluid. The study concerns the Airth area of the Clackmannan coalfield in the Scottish Midland Valley. The effort on building the static earth model and the history match results of the pre-existing ver...
Multi-media reservoirs depleted by horizontal wells: analysis of pressure behaviours and rate transient accompanied by developing analytical models for flow regimes
Al-Rbeawi, Salam (Inderscience Publishers, 2020-01-01)
This paper focuses on analysing pressure behaviours and rate transient of multi-porous media formations such as carbonate reservoirs depleted by horizontal wells. Several analytical models (pressure transient and rate transient) have been developed using the well-known dual-porosity models for naturally fractured formations and modified for triple-media formations considering the existence of hydraulic fractures. The solutions of these models demonstrate different flow regimes corresponding to different pro...
A pattern-based approach to waterflood performance prediction using knowledge management tools and classical reservoir engineering forecasting methods
Artun, Emre; Vanderhaeghen, Maurice; Murray, Paul (Inderscience Publishers, 2016-01-01)
An efficient and rapid workflow is presented to estimate the recovery performance of an existing vertical-well, pattern-based waterflood recovery design using knowledge management and reservoir engineering in a collaborative manner. The knowledge management tool is used to gather production data and calculate pattern-based recoveries and injection volumes by defining pattern boundaries and allocating annual well injection/production volumes in a systematic manner. Classical reservoir engineering forecasting...
Integrated analysis of pressure response using pressure-rate convolution and deconvolution techniques for varied flow rate production in fractured formations
Al-Rbeawi, Salam (Elsevier BV, 2018-03-01)
This paper introduces an integrated analysis for pressure transient behavior of conventional and unconventional multi-porous media reservoirs considering varied flow rate conditions. It focuses on the applications of pressure-rate convolution and deconvolution techniques for analyzing pressure records of homogenous single porous media, double porous media, and triple porous media reservoirs. The tasks covered in this paper are: Deconvloving pressure response, characterizing and developing analytical models ...
Assessment of fracture connectivity and potential for CO2 migration through the reservoir and lower caprock at the In Salah storage site
Smith, James; Durucan, Sevket; Korre, Anna; Shi, Ji-Quan; Sınayuç, Çağlar (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-01)
Fractures are thought to strongly affect the flow of CO2 at the In Salah storage site. In the work presented here, fracture networks at In Salah are characterised and modelled to assess percolation. Available fracture data is considered in the context of general characteristics of other fracture networks and this data is then used to model potential realisations of fracture networks within the In Salah reservoir and lower caprock. Horizontal percolation of fracture networks is highly dependent on fracture l...
